HA - no hot water?

Sameshitdifferentdayx · 11/08/2023 12:38

Didn't know where to put this.. so thought here would be the best place, I'm not a huge poster.

We are HA.. my boiler broke Wednesday and had been leaking (flooded all my worktops!) whilst I was out.
Called them out and was put on 24 hour emergency, they come within 2 hours and they said a pipe had emploded and they need to wait on the part to then come and fix it but need to isolate the boiler to just cold water. He said to leave the boiler off completely until it had stopped dripping/leaking.. which is still currently off because it's still leaking just not as much!
I have 3 DC. All under 9, youngest being 3. I have been without hot water since Wednesday 5pm and they've told me they can come out next Tuesday morning at the earliest to sort it.
Just wondering if I'm right to be miffed about this, and whether there was any rules or regs regarding having no hot water?! It's not the end if the world but I'm curious and fed up. Have no family locally etc to use theirs.

Yes I have a kettle, and I've been told to use this but isn't ideal! Also got told I have heating, because y'know, I need that on during August - and the boilers off anyway!! 🙄🥴

Any advice/help appreciated.
Thank you.

I am not sure why you think replacing he boiler will be any quicker? It's Friday now - they said they can come on Tuesday. Repalcing a combi boiler is pretty major work.

Replacing a boiler is less than a day's work. They should have done it days ago.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/08/2023 15:29

But you can't just replace a perfectly good boiler because it would take a few days to get a spare part - that is insane -new boilers cost thousands.

It's not a perfectly good boiler. It's left a 3 year old with no hot water for a week.

Keep on at them about water heaters and a rent rebate, OP. These are the very least of what they should be doing.

I can imagine it's not fun and you might all be a bit sweaty and whiffs but you will be fine. A trip to the local swimming pool would get everyone fresh and clean again. Have you got a garden? Hose pipe and padding pool would be fun and get them clean. Or maybe ask a neighbour or friend if you can have a quick shower at theirs?

Thank you for your replies.
We've managed through - which I knew we would but none the less just faff I didn't and don't need. No help after chasing more.
They have turned up this morning and informed me that the parts that were ordered and needed, are different to the parts he's picked up this morning to fix it, so he said he isn't hopeful but will have a look and try anyway, as it is still leaking 🙃 sooo.. I guess it's a waiting game to see what he can do and how much longer I'll be with no hot water! X

I rented from HA and had no hot water and heating for several weeks over winter due to the engineer struggling to get part to repair the boiler. I made regular contact and after escalating I was offered alternative accommodation and a rent reduction in the end. You pay to live there and they are obliged to provide a service. I’m not sure if the fact it was winter and we had no heating made it slightly worse but you do need to keep on at them. My son had to stay with family as he is asthmatic and developed a chest infection during this period, and although I can’t say for sure, it was likely made worse by staying in a freezing cold house. The person I escalated it to was very unhappy that we had been left for so long, so it may be worth kicking up a bit of a fuss- just be firm but polite that this is not good enough!

I can imagine during the winter months - it's a lot harder to manage without both heating and hot water

I'm keeping on, and will continue to. I put in a complaint to housing Friday and still awaiting to hear back.
I shall see what the outcome is once this guy that's here currently has left, and if it's still not resolved they'll be getting another phone call this afternoon. Appreciate it's hard to get the parts currently, but it's just the lack of support from them.

Thank you for replying x

Update.

They said ordered the correct part but have been given the wrong part.
He's rung to order more parts again, they've now been told the part they need doesn't exist anymore and they don't do it anywhere at all. We have now been told we need a whole new boiler because there are no other options.
This boiler and house is 8 years old 🙃 my HA refuse to replace boilers under 15 years old so he said this is going to be a fight to get it done as they'll tell us to fix it, and they've tried already. Soooo. Yeah 🤣😭 don't know whether to laugh or cry. But here we are x

Take the kids swimming = clean kids

Thank you, I have done once 😊 unfortunately as I don't drive and there is no pool locally, the cost of it all isn't doable as regularly as I'd like.
I've just been told by HA they have 10 days to find a part/fix the boiler and were only on day 6 so other than that for now, that's how it's been left with them.

Oh no! You have my sympathies. Earlier this year our washing machine broke and due to issues with parts etc.. the replacement machine we ordered took 2 weeks to be delivered. Then AO broke the door when unloading it from the van.

That model was then out of stock indefinitely and we had another two week wait after ordering something similar.

I was at the end of my tether whe it finally arrived - five weeks after we ordered a new machine.

Ah I don't know what would be worse, no hot water or no washing machine. 🙈 it's a complete mare. I'm still none the wiser in this situation. As expected, housing are putting up a fight in giving the go ahead in replacing the boiler. They've told the company who carry out the work to not carry on with any work for the time being and offered them other solutions regarding how they could be able to fix it. But the company have said there is no possible way, it's been condemned.
Have put in another complaint this afternoon after my first one hasn't even been dealt with/spoken to, to myself. The joys 🙃

It’s hard but you can manage. We had to manage for about 3-4 months with no hot water. No baths. No showers. If we wanted to wash up we had to boil a kettle. If we wanted to wash our hair, it was boil the kettle and mix with cold water and do that. It was horrible.

Soubriquet · 17/08/2023 17:37

Regarding the heat at the time, we had to get little electric radiators. We just simply couldn’t afford to put diesel in the tank which is why we had no hot water

100% we can manage. We have done. And I've been patient and understanding. But whether we can manage or not is beyond my point now. We shouldn't have to just manage, nobody should when there's a clear solution right infront of them. They're being difficult because the age of the boiler. That's all. There's a new one sat waiting to be fitted and could of been by the end of this week. There's no excuse now. Be a different ball game if we didn't pay a full weeks rent on time.

Sorry you had the experience you had. X
