Neighbour taking up all parking on the street!

A opposite neighbour is literally taking up all the road parking on our street. The street is a small street with about 30 house. This neighbour repairs auction cars on their drive but parks all the cars he’s waiting to repair or sell on the road.

There’s not much parking anyway as everyone has a drive and so low curbs there a little bit of a curb till the next drive. His cars are literally on every curb! He also parks a recover vehicle on the corner which blocks people with wheel chairs and pushchairs going past as it’s half on the pavement.

I know as long as the cars have road tax he can do this and it’s no one’s street but this is so annoying!

Also, I am aware the council have spoken to him a few times. This did die down for a couple of weeks but now it’s full force again!

is there anything I can do or do I just need to suck it up and remember who parks first gets the space?

Are all the cars taxed, MOT’d and insured?

im pretty sure he can’t do this (running a business from home and blocking the street). Keep reporting him to the council.

Cloudsandrainnotsunandsand · 10/08/2023 21:11

Report the cars to dvla and police if they aren't taxed or insured.

CoQ10 · 10/08/2023 21:13

Keep reporting, and I wonder if he's allowed to run a business and use the street parking as he is. Def worth asking the council.

Andanotherone01 · 10/08/2023 21:13

Is he running it as a business at home? If so, it’s illegal as he hasn’t got the appropriate facilities

SD1978 · 10/08/2023 21:16

Regardless of them being road taxed, if he's basically running the business from there, that may be illegal, I'd keep lodging it with the council, and police if any of the cars aren't taxed

ThreeLittleDots · 10/08/2023 21:18

Report to the council again and again.

Banquosfeast · 10/08/2023 21:21

It's a quick check on the DVLA website to see if a vehicle is taxed and has an MOT - just type in the reg number. If not, report.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 10/08/2023 21:26

As all above, but also report the recovery vehicle obstructing the crossing point / drop kerb. Is it on a junction or within 10m? If so, even better, hopefully he'll get a parking ticket.

VWT5 · 10/08/2023 21:33

Also involve your local councillor, incl photos as evidence of where vehicles are obstructing road junctions/ access for wheelchairs/pushchairs etc. He can lobby the Council to gain additional support and action.

What everyone else said plus get your neighbors involved.

Talkhe · 10/08/2023 22:42

Thanks everyone. I know people have complained before so I will definitely complain again. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t being annoying getting annoyed by this as my partner keeps saying leave it.

What would I search for on the councils website to report this please?

This would be classed as ‘nuisance parking’ have a look on google as it can be an offence

As others have said, just report over and over again. Be a pain in the arse about it. Take photos of the sale cars and the lorry blocking the pavement and email them to the council.

gogomoto · 10/08/2023 22:56

You can't run a business on the street so if he's parking multiple vehicles he is repairing on the street this is illegal. You also cannot advertise vehicles for sale commercially. I've reported and the council closed down doing exactly you describe (around 8 years ago) and yes this guy was blocked the lowered kerb for the pedestrian crossing! Certain businesses need licences as well, not sure about car repairs

Peachyscream · 10/08/2023 22:57

Watching with interest as I have the exact same problem.

Showdogworkingdog · 10/08/2023 23:19

He’s running a business from home and causing a nuisance. Keep complaining to the council and raise it with you local councillor too.

If you can get a number of other neighbours to complain with you it might help. Keep the complaint letter short and to the point and attach evidence if you can.

Is it the trading standards part of the local council site you report on? Two of the cars have been in the same place for 2 weeks now. Feel like reporting them as abandoned!

Depends on your council area, trading standards is a different council to my local council. Go to your local district council site and find ‘report it’. There you can report abandoned vehicles as well as him running a business from home and creating a nuisance.
