DD is 4 and has had sepsis twice previously. Shes been complaining of stomach ache for about 2 weeks and sleeping more which isn't like her AT ALL. Took her to a+e at midnight as she was crying in pain and complaining of pain in her right side abdo. She also has vomiting, pain in legs, saying she can't stand because her legs hurt, tried to poo but couldn't because it was hurting her, whingey, quiet, headache which shes never had before, very high temperature (they kept us for 4 hours in hospital to make sure they could get it down as it wasn't coming down but did in hosp) -all these symptoms started about 1pm yesterday. They did all the usual obs which were ok apart from temperature and they dipped her wee and said she had leukocytes but nothing else.. we were sent home and the dr told me it was probably all stemming from a stomach upset or something she'd eaten.. shes eaten the same as us all and were all fine and has barely been eating anyway! I left unhappy but thought ok you're the dr not much I can do.. but when I got home I googled the symptoms together and it said go to a and e right away as could be kidney infection and needs urgent treatment? Why have we been sent home then with nothing? Has anyone experienced symptoms like this and have any idea what it is?! Missed the 8am drs race for our GP so they're no good.. dont want to go to a and e again and have eyes rolled at me. Just clueless and scared to be honest.. TIA x

I have kidney problems, the pain occurs where the appendix is (sometime on the mirror side) but NOT in my back. Always been like that as the pain is in the Ureter is because the infection is cause by back flow (reflux).

The urine usually has a strong sweet amonia smell.

It can lead to Sepsis, I have had sepsis from it many times... fever is often the first symptom.

Antibiotics can usually fix it though.

How is she OP?

Summerwashout · 11/08/2023 08:49

Op I'm not surprised you are worried she sounds v poorly!.. I would also probably go back to a and e.

@dearJayne re your dd can you tell me what stage they investigated your dd please. We are entering week 3 of constipation and bladder issues, no fever and generally fine but we've been given two lots of antibiotics and not actually seen a doc yet or anyone actually feeling her stomach? Is this normal?

PollyPut · 11/08/2023 09:36

@Insheerpanic how is she? Does she still have a temperature?

Insheerpanic · 11/08/2023 15:35

Still has the temp and pain and having stages of been fine and then crying in pain with her head and stomach took her to GP today who said she defo has an infection in her urine and maybe elsewhere, she now has a rash too. He's ruled out meningitis but told us what to look for. Hopefully the antibiotics sort her out!

I don't have any medical experience but they monitor my son's kidneys and a sign is blood in urine which she doesn't seem to have?
I would also ring 111 and say unhappy and would like to see pediatrician (our local NHS children's unit told me to do this one for an appt as my friend's child could not get a GP referral there but was vomiting for weeks).

A rash can be a sign of sepsis too OP.

If you're not happy, do take her back. Trust your gut.

Do you have a pediatric A&E near you?
