To want to report my neighbour to his work for having his work van idle on the drive for over an hour every morning?

My neighbour starts his work van before 7am every morning and leaves it on the drive idling for over an hour. The environmental impact of that I’m sure is bad and also it’s noisy!
The other morning I took my car for a mot it was idling on the drive when I left and still there when I go back which was nearly 2 hours later!!
I really want to contact his place of work (whose van it is and who pay the fuel bill) and complain, however my husband says I shouldn’t. My neighbour wouldn’t take too kindly to me saying anything direct to him so I wanted to just anonymously report it.

@snowdropinwinter don’t be so pathetic.

My guess is it's got a tracker on it and he's meant to start work at 7! Leave him to it and buy some ear plugs!

Yes, all that pollution is actually good for you 🙄🙄🙄

LongStoryLong · 10/08/2023 21:39

What do you mean, the safest thing to do?

This is the safest thing to do and also results in less engine wear as it is warmer when it is under load.

Sorry, this was a reply to this post. What do you mean, “safest”?

I recently reported a work van idling for an hour every day at lunchtime. He was subcontracted to fit smart meters so was in the area for quite a while. I received an apology back from the company and a request to let them know if it continued. It didn't.

Good for you @BodenCardiganNot 👍 Idling work vans especially really annoying me

HateTheView · 11/08/2023 23:29

Sounds weird!

I've got a hybrid and I can start it before I get in from the app. I think even the fuel version can be started remotely, too. But you just use it to warm (defrost) or cool car the car before you get in. So no different to getting in the car, turning it on and sitting in it while it defrosts/de-mists or turning it on and standing outside while it cools. Assuming you're driving it into slow moving traffic on a hot day, otherwise you'd just open the windows!

Not sure why a car would need to be on for an hour.

Mangofandangoo · 11/08/2023 23:34

Maybe it's got some kind of engine recording equipment and having the van running makes his employer think he's working 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sounds like a dick

It’s illegal and a criminal traffic offence, I’d be tempted to take a video and report him to the police. I doubt his employer will care.

The worry is where you live and is clearly a wanker and might key your carnin revenge or similar.l so makensure he doesn’t know who reported him.

This. Report him @Lifeisthememories

You have no idea why he is doing that. So it's a bit ridiculous for you to suggest he us doing something wrong. Modern vehicles are the cleanest they have ever been. Are you seriously suggesting that a little car engine idling on someone's driveway is going to kill all the Polar Bears? Christ, don't ever set foot near the Drax Power station, your head would explode with the stuff coming out of that place.

There’s a reason idling an engine is a road traffic offence in many places, even in “clean modern engines”. It’s terrible for the local air quality and the the OP has right to be angry. Unfortunately neighbour is within the law if he’s doing it on his driveway and not in the street. Maybe do some research before you disregard the serious issues caused by idling.

OP - Could he be charging the batteries of equipment in the van? Why would he leave it running for so long? Even so, there must be a better way.

Mums for Lungs has a few pamphlet options that you can download and print off or even ask them to send you some copies. I’ve put them in the letterboxes of some neighbours who are chronic idlers, and even handed them directly to drivers idling outside my kids school. You could try that first?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 13/08/2023 22:26

@EmeraldDuck

"It’s illegal and a criminal traffic offence."

Really?

Please post the legislation you're referring to. Because I think you're making it up as you go along.

Rossannah · 13/08/2023 22:30

He probably thinks he's cheating the tracker. He won't be, they say when the engine starts, when driving starts, location etc.
I'd report to employer, this sounds like my kinda job should this be reported and I'd keep an eye on it had I not already flagged it from tracker report

Bookist · 13/08/2023 22:33

I expect his van has some sort of basic tracker on it which notifies the office when the engine is started/stopped. He's pretending that he's working.

curaçao · 13/08/2023 22:36

Fuck me, are you for real? You really need to get yourself a life!

User15387500 · 13/08/2023 22:37

Why are people saying it's illegal, it's not if it's on the drive, you are not allowed to idle to de ice your car on the road but you can on a driveway, though people do seem to run their cars to de ice them on a public road
