Tipping!

The hair and beauty salon I visit regularly is putting their prices up. I wholeheartedly understand their need to do this and will probably still be going there as I have done for years, even though it has always been a little more pricey than others in the area. It is a really lovely salon and worth that little bit extra IMO. But it’s made me wonder about tips - is tipping in a hairdressers/beauty salon even a thing anymore?! I thought about how their increased prices will now be the same as what I’d leave anyway as I have always left a tip but now thinking it’s probably quite a difference from other places when I add a tip to their new prices. I decided to do a bit of observation when I was last in - 4 people paid for their services whilst I was there and not one tip was left. I worked Saturdays in a hairdressers when I was a teen 10 years ago and used to love the thought of being appreciated so much that I would receive a tip so this really surprised me. Unless it’s because I was working in a fairly affluent area? Or that it was some time ago before massive inflation rates?
Not so much AIBU but more WWYD?

Mine doesn’t allow you to add a tip on card machine like in restaurants and I never have cash. So I don’t leave a tip anymore. Last time I paid £195, that was expensive enough!

ithinkhesawus · 10/08/2023 07:06

I tip - the machine let's me put extra in for the tip. I do tip less now though unfortunately

GoodChat · 10/08/2023 07:10

You tip because the service is worth more than you're being charged, IMO. This is no longer the case as you're being charged the full price you would have previously paid anyway.

PauliesWalnuts · 10/08/2023 07:14

I don’t tip anymore. My last cut and style cost me £50 in a northern suburban salon - I can’t afford to pay anymore.

Dragonsandcats · 10/08/2023 07:14

I don’t tip. It’s expensive enough!

LynetteScavo · 10/08/2023 07:27

I never used to tip the hairdresser.

I do if I haven't been for ages and she makes me laugh for 45 minutes though, and of course if I like what she's done. That's becoming more frequents my hairdresser has a QR code you can scan on the way out, so it's very subtle.

Proudgypsy · 10/08/2023 07:36

I receive a few different beauty services, hair, brows, nails. I've never tipped any of them. In fact I've never been given and option to add a tip at the time of payment so I highly doubt it's expected.

Overthebow · 10/08/2023 07:40

I don’t tip. It costs a lot already and the staff are all paid above minimum wage at the salon I go to so not sure why I would tip. I can’t tip every person who does a job for me or I’d be bankrupt!

BrawnWild · 10/08/2023 07:41

If I go to a branded salon where i get given whichever hairdresser is on the rota, I tend not to tip unless the person goes above and beyond.

If i use a local hairdresser with relatively cheap prices or my regular hairdresser who is affordably priced and very accommodating then yes, I tip.

I tip when I think the person who helped me hould feel proud of themselves. Plenty of people can do a good job to the required standard. Hats what basic pay is for. A tip is for someone who you vibe with and makes your appointment special.

Basketballqueen · 10/08/2023 07:43

I don't tip, never have - the cost is already v high

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 10/08/2023 07:46

I try and tip but my hair costs £115 and I go every 8 weeks. Last time I only had a fiver in cash and couldn't do it by card so I left it. Another client was leaving at same time and she didn't tip. Nails again will try. They're all Vietnamese and it's difficult to talk to them but they're very friendly so if I have change I do

The80sThe80s · 10/08/2023 07:58

I never tip as the price is already high. I earn just above minimum wage and don’t go as often as I used to as I simply can’t afford it.

Cherubimbum · 10/08/2023 08:25

I think tipping your hairdresser stems from times when hairdressers were notoriously badly paid and there wasn't a legal requirement to be paid at least the national minimum wage. This is no longer the case so I don't generally tip
just as I don't tip the checkout person in Asda for doing their job or the practice nurse at my doctor's surgery.

Saammy · 10/08/2023 21:18

Yeah this was my thinking with the new prices etc but was worried in case this was not the norm! 🙈
