DS(6) and I are about to finish Pippi Longstockings, I never read it as a child but loved the film…oh my goodness the book is incredible! We are both loving it so much.

I have a huge stack of books that I want to read aloud to him but the list is ever growing. We may finish it by the time he’s an adult 😂

What are you currently reading aloud? Are you enjoying it? And what has been your favourite?

My granddaughter has just had her 7th Birthday and is obsessed with Harry Potter.

We're reading The Philosopher's Stone together. It's a lovely version (large book) with illustrations.

She's just been to Alnwick Castle and did some broomstick training - she loved it.

Coffeaddict · 09/08/2023 20:33

At that age I was reading Roald Dahl to DSS. Think it was also the age he started to get into harry potter.

DS is only 3 more into the julai Donaldson stuff but I did lefer when you could go onto chapter books

Quackadoodledoo · 09/08/2023 20:38

I just finished the Very Hungry Caterpillar. It's actually the same book (physically the same) that my mother read to me. Very glad to see it's aged well.

TheBeautifulTeapot · 09/08/2023 20:40

I'm reading Truckers by Terry Prachett to my 9 year old at the moment. We're both really enjoying it!

Flora56 · 09/08/2023 20:44

Shiny Pippin and the broken forest by Harry Heape (for a third time!)

ouse · 09/08/2023 20:48

My six year old and I are reading The Boy who Lived with Dragons by Andy Shepherd. He’s reading The Treekeepers with his dad. He likes reading the Percy Jackson and related series by himself. I really liked reading Ben Miller’s stories with him.

NeverAloneNeverAgain · 09/08/2023 20:48

Currently on the adventures of the wishing chair then moving on to the magic faraway tree. My nana used to read them to me when I was little. It brings back some lovely memories

ladygindiva · 09/08/2023 20:51

The worst witch series, DD (6) is obsessed, we are on book 5 of I think 9 😭
Just started lemony Snicket with her twin but I think it's too soon
They both LOVED the lion witch and the wardrobe and I highly recommend the rescue zoo series, they surpassed my expectations, quite good stories

chipshopElvis · 09/08/2023 20:52

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase to my dyslexic 12 year old. She has to read 4 pages, I read the rest of the chapter. We're both enjoying it lots.

CoodleMoodle · 09/08/2023 20:57

We're currently reading The Train To Impossible Places to 9yo DD at the moment, then we'll follow that with the next two. She's really enjoying it but as DH and I take turns to read her a couple of chapters every night we have to have a little recap afterwards so the other one knows where we are Grin If we forget to do it it's very confusing.

Before that we went through the Five Find Outers, which DD loved. We've also fairly recently done HP, Famous Five, Secret Seven... We might read The Borrowers next, or Anne of Green Gables. We've got a few books in the Adventure Island series by Helen Moss, sort of Enid Blyton mysteries but a bit more modern. DD is keen to get onto those too.

And DS is only 5 but I think he'll be ready for chapter books soon. The first one we read to DD was The Faraway Tree so we'll probably start there!

bookworm14 · 09/08/2023 20:58

I’m reading Inkheart by Cornelia Funke to my almost 8 year old. We are enjoying it although I think it’s over-long. Before that I read her the entire Harry Potter series (had planned to stop after book 3 as I was worried the others would be too scary/sad, but she was obsessed by that point so we just carried on!).

TheFrenchLieutenantsMonkey · 09/08/2023 21:00

Wyrd Sisters to my ASD teen daughter and The Inheritance series to my teen ASD son (Eragon, Eldest etc) DD3 who is 12 and NT has a sneaky listen in sometimes 😁
I get quite into reading stories and do voices and everything. Don't think I'd have ever won an oscar for my rendition of an Icelandic accent for Saphira the dragon (dont know why Icelandic it just seemed to happen!) but its fun and the kids like it.

Longwhiskers · 09/08/2023 21:05

Harry Potter 4 to my nearly nine yr old. It takes us so long to get through each one (due to having school reading books too) I insist we take a break of several months between each and in the gaps we’ve been reading Roald Dahl! I’ve got a nearly six year old but mainly still listening to picture books, should probably move onto a series!

Laiste · 09/08/2023 21:10

Just finished all the Harry Potters to DD(9) and started on Fing by David Walliams.

I hate DW and his books but this was a present and DD wanted it read to her 🙄

Sunshinebuttercupsrainbows · 09/08/2023 21:12

I’ve loved reading Roald Dahl too! We finished The BFG last week and he listens to Matilda on his yoto every night after we read it last year. Did NOT enjoy The Great Glass Elevator though, it was torturous!

We loved The Borrowers, Faraway Tree, and The Worst Witch series too. I think a Ben Miller one is in our TBR pile (The Night We Fell Into a Story? Or something like that!) Also The Yorkshire Vet.

DS is reading independently, loves any graphic novel as is working his way through all the Bunny vs Monkey books at the moment, but I can’t imagine a day where I no longer read aloud to him! It’s such a huge part of our lives.

Ds is 13, we have just finished carries war and now starting Diary of Anne Frank. The theme of our bedtime stories tends to be similar thanks to his autistic areas of interest!

PartnersInCrime · 09/08/2023 21:18

Harry Potter and the half blood prince.

Lovingitallnow · 09/08/2023 21:22

Ds is 7, we've read Toto, Boot, the younger Ronald Dahl stuff, just finished the Faraway Tree series. He's started the bad guys. I'm dying to start Harry Potter but don't want to start too soon.

I'm reading Truckers by Terry Prachett to my 9 year old at the moment. We're both really enjoying it!

I'm just about to finish Wings with my 8 year old. Brilliant books!

MountMumanddad · 09/08/2023 21:30

I’m reading The Girl Who Fell Into a Fairytale with DD and DS. It’s the first time they’ve been really into a chapter book, I tried Harry Potter about a year ago but it was too soon I think.

I hate DW books too but I have to admit they worked wonders for getting DS to enjoy reading - I was very pleased when that phase passed though!

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase to my dyslexic 12 year old. She has to read 4 pages, I read the rest of the chapter. We're both enjoying it lots.

My sister and I used to love the film. Stephanie Beecham was an amazing baddie! Can still recite a few lines 🤣

BangingOn · 09/08/2023 21:33

I’m reading Artemis Fowl to my 9 year old, we are both loving it.

notforonesecond · 09/08/2023 21:35

Just started Harry Potter with my just turned 7 yo DD. We’re loving it, I’ve not read the first one in years.

Makes such a nice change from endless fairy magic books - they’re all the bloody same! I wish Kirsty and Rachel would fuck off!

mellongoose · 09/08/2023 21:38

Currently Harry Potter or The Little Mermaid or Pony Club. She's 8 and a reluctant reader, so we mix it up!
