To think the landlord knew about this and needs to sort it!

Moved into a rented property last month.

First morning after we moved in, a massive fox was laying in the middle of the lawn catching some rays like it owned the place.

That night two of them were at the back door. Since then we have been plagued by them. Can’t leave patio or back doors open as they are there.

Everyday 2 to 3 piles of shit on driveway and front garden. One day, there was 5! Quite often it is runny too and it is making me heave having to clear it up.

Spoke to letting agent asking if landlord (who lived in property until a few days before we moved in) was aware and had he been feeding them. He denied it which I absolutely do not believe as they didn’t suddenly pop up on the day after we moved in!

I’ve used Scoot, chilli powder and garlic, vinegar but they still come back and shit. We shoo them away but they’re there again as soon as back is turned. I’ve honestly never seen anything like it. We used to live in an area with foxes nearby but they never came on property and never crapped on it. DH has seen neighbours feeding them.

We don’t leave any rubbish out and have nothing here that would interest them. It’s driving me nuts and totally ruined my enjoyment of living here (very expensive property for what it is).

AIBU to think the landlord should shell out for chicken wire fencing to cover massive holes in the hedge and a gate to stop them coming round the back (currently it’s open from the drive) rather than us?

I have foxes in my front and back garden. I've done nothing to encourage them. It's just one of those things.

ApolloandDaphne · 09/08/2023 15:10

The landlord cannot be responsible for wild foxes in the garden. They would just shimmy over any gate or chicken wire. My DD lived in a flat where there was a family of foxes living at the bottom of the garden. There was nothing they or the landlord could do about it. The foxes screamed all night and eventually DD moved out of the flat as it was very annoying.

DisquietintheRanks · 09/08/2023 15:10

Get some "Dog off". It is not your landlord's responsibility to fix proof your garden unless it states "fox proof" in the lease.

Coldheadedathos · 09/08/2023 15:19

Do you have a male partner or friend who would "water" the boundary for you? The smell of an entire male will discourage them massively.

Eloweeese · 09/08/2023 15:24

We have foxes. They jump a six foot wall to get into the garden. If you shout and chase them off every time you see them they will soon get the message.

Got a dog you can borrow for a week or two?

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 09/08/2023 15:28

Foxes can dig under chicken wire and jump six foot walls. What do you expect the landlord to do, exactly?

RB68 · 09/08/2023 15:34

Borrow a couple of great Danes or Alsatians or ridgebacks

This reminds me of when I once got a message from tenants complaining that the birds in the trees sang too loudly early in the morning and wanting to know what was I going to do about it ...

And same house, different tenant: They found they couldn't sit out in the garden at night without getting bitten by mosquitos and they expected me to deal with the issue (there was no water in the garden).

WTF! This really isn't something a LL has to rectify surely?????? He/she isn't letting the garden to them!

jeaux90 · 09/08/2023 16:25

OP you can't be serious! The cubs will leave the den/mother by the autumn. If you are that bothered by them there is some guidance on the RSPCA website around how to discourage them.

Your LL is not responsible for Foxes.

richteaftw · 09/08/2023 19:09

Get a hose pipe and squirt them.

Hardly anything your LL can do 😂

PickledPurplePickle · 09/08/2023 19:37

YABU this is not an issue the landlord can control
