AIBU to think you should wear a top in a food shop?

Just been to our Tesco Local and there were a small group of workmen picking up sandwiches, fruit etc all not wearing tops.

AIBU to think it’s only common courtesy to wear a T-shirt to enter a food shop?

Btw before I get flamed, it’s in no way a snobbery thing re workmen I just think it’s good manners.

It’s rancid, the sweat dripping on apples. My husband is helping his mate with his landscaping business this week, if he behaved like this I would be sickened

Mrsjayy · 09/08/2023 15:24

I was at an outside funday thingy and there was a guy in a food van shirtless that is just gross

Northernsouloldies · 09/08/2023 15:25

Definitely tink behaviour otherwise.

FairAcre · 09/08/2023 15:25

Even worse if I was in Aldi the other day and somebody was walking around with a big dog. It was on a lead (not a service dog) but none of the staff seemed to bat an eyelid. I’m sure it’s not allowed.

ManateeFair · 09/08/2023 15:27

Well, I personally think it's a bit skanky. But equally it doesn't actually affect me in any way whatsoever, so I think it's just one I'd file under 'none of my business' really.

I think there's usually a sign - 'proper footwear and top required'. They should have been stopped.

There shouldn’t need to be a sign.

Fraaahnces · 09/08/2023 15:30

Yuck… I live in a hot part of Australia and I hate it when blokes schlepp around with their shirts off. Incidentally, it’s actually illegal for ANYONE to get around topless here, but no man has ever been arrested or charged for doing so in Australia. (But many women!)

I once saw a shirtless bloke leaning over the tray of apples scratching his hairy chest. I could see the hairs falling into the apples, and so most likely skin cells too, I didn’t buy apples that day.

You don’t have to ‘get worked up about it’ to think it’s not very nice.

🤮that is beyond gross. Supermarkets are you listening? It has an effect on your sales.

@pinguins I found your post interesting too. Surely shops have to protect their staff and not have them feeling intimidated at work?

BunnyBetChetwynnd · 09/08/2023 15:36

A trend this year seems to be for topless male joggers, but always carrying their t-shirt in one hand. I always wonder what they're carrying the shirt for. In case they pass a nun?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 09/08/2023 15:40

YANBU.. it's basic courtesy to wear a T shirt.. especially in a supermarket imo

Here they have the shirt hanging out the waistband of their joggers showing off their underwear brand,!

Perhaps they removed it when it got too hot.

As a runner, I don't like seeing topless runners myself, but at least they're not in a vicinity selling food.

Can't say I've ever seen women in sports bras in supermarkets, but that wouldn't be appropriate either.

It's a bit rank. Years ago when we went to France my brother was refused entry to the supermarket until he put a top on. Still in this country the staff would probably get a mouthful of abuse.

tBF, he probably would have frozen to death if it was anything like our local Carrefour.

mum1527 · 09/08/2023 16:15

1000000% agree it basic decency

aSofaNearYou · 09/08/2023 16:17

Aside from the issue around men being able to do this and women not, which does bother me, I can't see much connection with it being in a food shop, that part specifically would not bother me.

Where did you say this was?....

I don't mind men not wearing tops.

what do you suppose is going to happen as a result?

tt9 · 09/08/2023 16:27

tbh I think men should always wear a top unless on a beach/ in their own home.

I don't want to see all that especially the beer bellies hanging out

That's made me feel a bit sick. What's wrong with people 🤮

dancinfeet · 09/08/2023 16:37

there is a bloke who lives opposite our local nisa who frequently goes across the road to the shop in just his boxer shorts and a pair of sliders if the weather is warm. it’s grim, no one wants to encounter that in the biscuit aisle 🤮

greenspaces4peace · 09/08/2023 16:48

No shirt, no shoes, no service.

No shirt, no shoes, no service.

Absolutely this.

Its shocking people would need to have this spelled out to them

Young girls walk in to my local tesco in bikini tops and short.

put a tshirt on girl. No desire to see the baps out picking up my milk. She probably wouldn’t wear a bra to shop so a bikini top is no different

continentallentil · 09/08/2023 19:18

Yes, nipples next to the chiller section is something I can do without

TheDogsMother · 09/08/2023 19:21

Urrgghhh hate this. It's entitled and potentially unhygienic.

heyitsthistle · 09/08/2023 19:23

Topless in your garden, the park or the beach: fine.

Anywhere else: put a bloody shirt on.
