To refuse to check immigration status of my students

Nevermay · 08/08/2023 18:07

Have been informed that as of September, tutors in the comprehensive school where I work will be expected to check the immigration status of students in our tutor groups, particularly new ones, and highlight any suspicious individuals.

I've thought about this for a few weeks, and have decided to simply say no, not my job, I don't have time, I wouldn't recognise a false passport if it bit my ear, and I really don't want to mess up my relationships with my students in their first week in the school. I emailed my union yesterday to inform them of the instruction, and my decision, no response yet, I have spoken to a couple of other colleagues I am friends with, and they are not happy either - I don't know if they will actually refuse, but I suspect so

Would you do it?

Well done

We should all rebel against State encroachment in our lives and against being forced to police each other.

Landlords are required to check the immigration status of intending tenants.
The number of international students studying at our universities is not as alarming as the fact that it's being used as route to migration. With each visa paving the way for 4 minor children and a spouse. Free education, free healthcare and security.
The Care Visa is even worse. No or minimal visa and visa renewal fees, no healthcare surcharge, many paying over £10,000 to unscrupulous Care Home Owners to provide them a Certificate of Sponsorship having paid the Home Office about £200 for it. 100 COSs x £1,000,000. Care Home Owners are laughing all the way to the bank on fraud. For one Care Worker the country gets 4 minor children and one dependent adult (free schooling and healthcare). More demand on rental property, mostly over crowded in one or two bedroom flats. Then the Care Home doesn't provide the shifts for many of the workers so they get stranded and desperate to make money.
Having provided fake or manipulated bank statements showing funds sufficient for the initial few months of their upkeep. Some owe the migration consultants who loaned them the funds, so they're in debt in their home country too. The dependent visa needs to be stopped.
Give a 2yr then 4yr visa for careers while govt puts in place a training and recruitment drive with better wages. Otherwise govt is still hemorrhaging in the higher demand for school places and healthcare as a result.

That's an admin task for the school not a job for teachers during form tutor time. It should be part of the admissions process, nothing to do with teaching, whether that's pastoral teaching or subject teaching.

Also, it's not something that should be brought up with the children in a classroom environment on privacy grounds. It's their parents or guardians who should be in communication with the school if anything needs checking.

100% agree.
