Basketball hoop in the front garden next to my window

my neighbours have installed hard surfaces covering both back and front gardens. The back is wood and used for skateboarding. The front now has a basketball hoop on concrete.

There is not one room in my home that isn't constantly banging or skateboarding. My old dog is terrified to go out. I feel like I'm going crazy.

AITA for thinking the hoop is step too far - they have a driveway at the side as well as another garden that's been turned to hard surface. Cannot understand why they would put it next to my living room and bedroom window instead.

You sound like a a very selfish neighbour. Worse still, due to those late nights your poor child's brain shan't develop properly and anti-social behaviour and cognitive and spatial deficits will likely follow them their entire life. I feel so sad for your children.

I very much doubt it will have any effect, his dad was the same growing up (and still is) without any ill effects. He's still getting around 9hrs just 11pm-8am vs 9pm-6am 😉 reality he needs about 8hrs so will actually be asleep midnight to around 8am, no alarm or noise he's the first up naturally usually. He's just put his book down.

@maddening not really we have a good sized garden but we aren't totally isolated. Our neighbours hot tub is just on the other side of our fence. We have a closed board fence (50:50 split the cost) for privacy but I can hear it occasionally doesn't bother us. The pizza oven seems to be an invitation for hopeful texts 🤣 have a feeling if we get a good end to the summer I will be having the street for pool parties!

It works both ways our neighbours at the back send footballs into our garden which get thrown back or the kids run round for. Neighbour to the left love a coal BBQ which has caught me with the washing out before, no drama just re-washed.

It's normal to use a garden OP, as I said suggest a freestanding basket ball hoop and medication for the dog as it's obviously a shock from the previous neighbours

i have cameras, the council and police aren't interested, the lawyer is but of course so expensive!

Lawyer may only be interested because they get paid no matter what..

If your garden was tiny, that hot tub was immediately outside your bedroom window and the neighbours were outside at midnight with music blaring and shrieking at all hours with the firepit billowing smoke into your house I doubt you would be saying the same, it really does depend on the space and how considerate the neighbours are - it is possible to all rub along nicely but arseholes will make it a living hell.

The children are 5 and 8? Are they even able to reach the hoop? I would assume they'd get bored with it in a few weeks and it'll go unused.

i have installed cameras, even have them on film threatening me and tearing down a wall and my bushes - but cops and council aren't interested. claim it's a civil matter.

Lazy, lying, negligent bastards. As a previous poster suggested, try your MP, along with some footage.

Also, your Police and Crime Commissioner. Ask if threatening behaviour and criminal damage are civil matters; they are not.

I think people do this because no one seems to send children to play in parks any more. So they are doing all the noisy things they should be doing in parks, in tiny gardens behind semis and terraced houses where its terrifically disruptive to any one else.

What the fuck is wrong with our society that we don't feel we can send 9/10 year old kids to play football or basketball in a park any more?

Sometimes i don't even think its the threat of pervs etc, its that people don't trust kids that age to behave responsibly and that's a problem imho

The kids in OPs story are only 5 and 8. Few children at that age will be great at skateboarding or basketball and be dedicated enough to do these things ‘constantly’. Its all sounding a bit unlikely to me.

so they have just built a cement paved area all over their front of their house
Oh goody, they have broken the law, in the first instance building a hard standing in the front garden, I think you need permission, secondly it has to be a surface that allows drainage. I think whatgov or planning website might be your friend here. Secondly, record everything and have a chat with the police, not a report but a chat. Tell them everything that has been said including the racist accusation, and ask their advice. This will be recorded but they wont be contacted unless you request it.

It's absolute hell..my neighbours have done the very same thing. I've got cluster migraines because the basketball hoop was almost inside my back door. My husband was dying and I couldn't even open a window for fresh air without the banging constant from the school finished until 11pm.I've never had anything like this in my life. I've been left with migraine headaches and it's really bad. UNCONCIDERATE FOLK SHOULD BE SHOT
