To never tip the Uber Eats driver?

oceanbeach2000 · 07/08/2023 19:46

I used to tip every driver even if it was a mere £2. Still something.

But I think everyone has experienced that disappointment when 1 or more items from your order is missing.

(I'm not talking just specifically Uber Eats, I also mean Just Eat, Hungry House, Deliveroo etc)

Do you tip? If not, why?

I don't tip them.
They get a salary and the delivery charges are added to the order anyway. Not my fault if they're not paid enough 🤷🏻‍♀️

Well it’s all our fault really. Costs are cut to the bone because we don’t want to pay enough for a luxury service to pay people properly.

I always tip the person that is alone in the car with my food. Where possible I tip before it arrives. I try and use the same take out.

Wanking in the mayonnaise was not an urban myth where I grew up. He was arrested.

Delivery drivers don’t prepare the food. The food I get is in sealed bags, therefore the driver can’t tamper. Don’t spread silly rumours.

I don't use any of those apps, because they already add a surcharge to each dish for using them! I only order home delivery from places who have their own delivery drivers. If they don't deliver and the uber/just eat etc is the ONLY option for delivery, then I'll collect it or not bother.

I don't routinely tip them- no.

I’ve often looked as I’d prefer to order direct. Once you add it all up it’s rarely cheaper from the restaurant. I still do it if I can as it means they get all the profit, but if I want a particular place and I can’t get it direct I assume they’ve factored that in.

Bandyarsia · 07/08/2023 22:13

Every single time without fail.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 07/08/2023 22:14

I don't use Ubereats often, but when I do I tend to tip because how fast they deliver and the fact I've never had any issues.

Boomboom22 · 07/08/2023 22:15

Definitely not. Tipping in general is a piss take, pay your employees enough. Good point care workers don't get tips!

TinySaltLick · 07/08/2023 22:16

Yes tip every time

Wanking in the mayo! 😵🤮

The drivers/riders aren't 'employees' though, or at least they didn't used to be. They're self employed, so can be paid either an adequate amount or virtually fuck all depending on whether they're in the right place at the right time for getting as many deliveries in as possible. See also Amazon.

I can only compare places with a printed or online menu, that offer both in house deliveries and also those app places. When I order direct- I pay exactly what is on their menu.

If I ordered via those app sites, they add on an average of £1 to each main and 50p for each entree and side- if not more! This is in addition to their delivery charge etc. When I compared like for like, it was £10 extra for the exact same meal, from the exact same restaurant!!! Maybe different in other areas, but for that difference, I'd drive/walk to collect the meal if they didn't have an inhouse delivery option.

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/08/2023 22:35

I only have a takeaway about 6 times a year, if that. I always order direct from the restaurant. I always tip the delivery person.

labamba007 · 07/08/2023 23:00

They don't earn enough. They don't get an hourly wage like an ordinary job. Many rely on tips. So yes, I always tip.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 07/08/2023 23:04

I never use Uber eats but I use deliveroo and just eat sometimes. I never tip. I don’t tip the postman or Amazon delivery drivers either. Or in restaurants, taxis and hairdressers for that matter. Wages should be covered in the upfront fees, if they’re not that’s for employees to take up with their employers just as I would if I wanted to negotiate a better wage from my job where, like most, there’s no tipping culture.

A few quid quid usually. I wish they were paid properly but like waiters I think they rely on tips

Waiter are paid a wage and do not reley on tips.

VeridicalVagabond · 07/08/2023 23:33

I tipped the guy who delivered our pizza last night because he was just uncommonly lovely, and apparently came to us via rocket because our pizzas were still super hot.

Ordinarily I don't tip though, I just felt he deserved it for cutting about in the rain delivering pizzas at lightning speed and still managing to be the most polite person I spoke to all day.

You're thinking of the USA where tips are practically mandatory.

determinedtomakethiswork · 08/08/2023 06:58

I think I heard that Deliveroo take 30% of the cost from the restaurant.

shivawn · 08/08/2023 07:02

I very rarely get food delivered, maybe once a year. I'd much rather eat out but if we are getting a takeaway then we collect it because it's faster and fresher that way. On the rare occasion that we get it delivered then I do tip.

In the UK waiters are paid minimum wage.

thelinkisdead · 08/08/2023 07:06

I never ever tip. I’ll only tip in a restaurant if the food or service is impeccable. Someone wants more money than they are earning then they can find another job.

guineacup · 08/08/2023 07:09

Sigmama · 07/08/2023 21:35

Of course I tip, they don't earn enough

I'm not sure where this idea that delivery drivers are some kind of pitiable charity cases. If it doesn't pay enough, they can get a job elsewhere in this job market, and creating a culture where lower paid people are at the mercy of customer whims for a portion of their pay isn't healthy.

If people were honest with themselves most pay delivery drivers because it's their little opportunity to play "lady bountiful" fleetingly.

Sigmama · 08/08/2023 08:07

Guineacup - haha lady bountiful? Tipping 2 quid? I think not. Nah, I think they deserve a tip, they're self employed, its hard work, and I doubt most of them reach those levels of earning in the article, I'll carry on thanks

Gingerkittykat · 08/08/2023 08:33

I see delivery drivers sitting outside McDonalds all the time waiting for orders to come in so there are obviously periods of time they are not earning anything.

I ordered from UberEats once, I had a voucher for £10 but they never told me there would be £7 of fees added on so I deleted the app!

Florissante · 08/08/2023 09:18

I always tip delivery drivers.

That’s fine if you want to continue tipping, but don’t call other people tight for not tipping as you did earlier on this thread. It is the employer who is tight. The customer already pays a fee for delivery, so it’s perfectly acceptable not to effectively pay twice.
