18
Same as my nieces and nephew. It wasn't an issue in our family just the way it worked. It's an approach that hasn't had any negative backfiring. All the younger generation (ages 18 - 32) drink in a normal, responsible way. They didn't go mad at 18 and start binge drinking as posters frequently suggest.
I don't understand the rush to get children drinking. There's no need and plenty of research that demonstrates that statistically, starting drinking young is more likely to be linked with problematic drinking.

12ish would have been allowed, wasn't interested though, still managed to come home hammered one night at 15 ffs!
She's 22 now and rarely drinks.

Also I think it's obvious that it's not smart to give alcohol to other peoples kids Confused

Obvious to you as a reasonable person. Oddly a significant minority of parents don’t see a problem with it. I too would not have believed it without having had recent first hand experience….!

Thanks for the input. I think yes moving maybe kind of 17-18 plus if they want to try it is a better option.

I was probably 12-13 when I first had alcohol at home - just a sip of wine or beer out of my parents glass. I had my first "proper" alcoholic drink at 14 I think - it was mostly WKD/Smirnoff Ice type things, or Bucks Fizz, or Baileys with lots of ice.

I'm 34 now and have never had an issue with alcohol. Only drink once or twice a year. My dad is now teetotal but my mum has a glass of wine 3-4 times a week. We have alcoholism in the family too.

Aside from minesweeping the Prosecco glasses on her first birthday, DD has had a tiny glass of fizz at special occasions
since she was quite small - 7 or so? I don’t drink routinely so she isn’t picking up “alcohol is great” vibes from me. We shared a flute of fizz at the airport a month ago when we bagged airport lounge access (she’s nearly 13).

Her dad makes his own beer and she’s helped with that, including tasting, since she was very small.

Why the hell would anyone offer a disinterested teen alcohol at 14? That is very weird. What pisses me off is when other parents give alcohol to my own under 16 teens. You’re not a cool parent love you’re breaking the law.

I don’t think it’s illegal at home.
We are very much take it or leave it when it comes to alcohol but I think that by having a relaxed attitude to it they won’t suddenly binge at 18.
We never offered it but if they asked they could have a small drink from around 14

Half a pint of lager or shandy, or small splash of something sparkling for a toast: 16+. Full glass of wine 18+.

12 or 13 a few sips worth, 14 a small glass at events like Christmas if they wanted (they didn’t all)

There’s nothing new about doing this and while I’m not convinced it does anything to prevent drinking too much later, I certainly don’t think it makes it any worse.

On balance I’d prefer their first association with alcohol to be nice wine chosen to go with a meal, to be gently sipped while chatting with multi-generational family, rather than vodka in the park with mates

Definitely this. Neither of my adult DC are big drinkers. DD drinks if she goes out, DS really isn't that interested at all.

I drink more than them put together unfortunately.

It seems you have to really pick something that works for you as a family. I’m not sure because of alcoholics in my family. I mean I’ve lost count of all of them. My dad, all his siblings (male and female) although two are now recovering. My Grandfather, great uncles. It’s more of a male thing than female thing.

my FIL is also an alcoholic. So I’m just surrounded.

My kids are 14 and 15 now and I've recently started letting them have cider each week. They usually have 2-4 cans a week max - they are usually the small cans, but sometimes I buy the big cans.

We have let them try a half a glass of Prosecco at special events ie birthdays/Christmas for a few years now.

My 15 year old says he has friends who get really drunk on spirts but he doesn't seem bothered. He has never come home drunk or even smelling of drunk.

My 14 year old doesn't really go out and has a much quieter group of friends.
