Reasonable Adjustments, do they transfer?

I am moving departments at work, to a new position under a new line manager.

My current line manager who is on holiday at the moment, arranged for me to have a couple of reasonable adjustments, due to my chronic pain levels and using a wheelchair. A passport.

Will these adjustments move with me, or is it up to my new boss?

I think it’s typo; but what has a passport got to do with it? I’m not sure what that’s supposed to have said.

it depends if your adjustments were documented and logged with HR, or just accommodations informally agreed with your previous manager.

My boss called it a passport of my needs or maybe a disability passport. Something like that.

Are the reasonable adjustments documented anywhere other than a mutual agreement with your current manager? And were the agreements reached through an informal chat?

Barrell · 05/08/2023 21:34

The overall duty to make reasonable adjustments will still apply, so it depends on whether you continue to be at a disadvantage due to your disability in your new role and if so, whether the adjustments continue to be reasonable.

It’s really a question to asking your employer.

Lots of businesses use passports, so your adjustments move with you.

I've heard of a passport used in hospitals.

Yes you should be having a conversation with your new boss. Mention it to them!

If you place of work I’d like mine and they have set you up with a “disability passport” with the adjustments on there then yes they should transfer with you but might be worth checking

Good, that is reassuring

This is not a one size fits all question as all work places will do it differently. Just ask your old and new boss what the arrangements are.

Worrysaboutalot · 05/08/2023 21:39

My new boss as arranged a welcome meeting, so I will bring it up, at the end of that if she doesn't mention it.

Yes we have passports at my work for those with caring responsibilities (more elder care and caring for those with disabilities but can extend to childcare particularly if a single parent), medical conditions and disabilities, the point of them is that you just write everything down once and then it moves with you, if the reasonable adjustments still work for you then they would move with you.

Gratedpotato · 05/08/2023 21:49

I have come across this a few times in work and they mostly move with the person unless the new role would require entirely different adjustments so the passport would need to be updated and rewritten to reflect what you need in the new role.
If something is working for you and can be reasonably accommodated there is no reason for them to take anything away that you already have.

Worrysaboutalot · 06/08/2023 11:18

Yes, same adjustments needed. Just allowing me to take annual leave/flexi time with no notice, if my pain levels are too high.

Plus being considerate with how much office based and remote meetings in person I am asked to do. Both roles are 100% home based. I really hope that doesn't change.

In my current job I do one meeting in person every quarter (every three months) and I have only took a few hours flexi here and there for pain levels, similar to that my peers take off flexi for their own reasons.

So everything crossed that my new manager will agree something similar.

Just an update that my new boss has accepted my passport adjustments from my last role.

With the addition, that this new role may include more face to face meetings. I am too decide if each face to face meeting I am invited too is doable and go if possible. I have an out if pain forces me to cancel last minute.

But we are only talking quarterly meetings not weekly so I am hoping to get to them, health permitting.

She was very fair. I hope I don't need to lean too much on these adjustments. However I am relieved that I have that support in place in case if I need it. 😁
