Treatment/ cause for hyper pigmentation?

Hi. Please can I ask if anyone has found out cause of hyperpigmentation and the treatment for it.

I have developed mild area of hyper pigmentation but after being in the warm on holiday it’s really noticeable. I was seeing factor 50 and wearing a hat when o could so didn’t think much of it. I use screens a lot at work and have been using factor 50 moisturiser thinking g blue light may not be helping.

Anyway I’ve had a little google and it talks about various reasons (hormone, stress hormones, thyroid etc). I’m in my 40s and wondered if hormone changes could be a cause too? Not on the pill or any other hormone treatment.

I have been wearing some Vichy foundation which helps cover it up but I’d rather get to the root cause and treat it itself. Has anyone used any shop bought lightening creams/ ointments that have helped or gone to the dr/ via nhs and received any help for it? any preventative products that have helped?

thanks for any ideas/ feedback x

I had this every time I was pregnant - on my face. It looked as though I had a large moth glued across my face! And there were times in my cycle when it would return, although not quite as spectacular.

I had 3 freckles on my face before my 1st baby. Same after. The 2nd baby though - I'm basically an entirely different colour, all freckles. Didn't realise until I had to renew passport, but she's 18 months old now so it's not going away. I had a small Google and it suggested the only way to fix it was with skin bleach, which I'm not interested in. I don't cover up or makeup or anything like that, this is just what I look like now...

I originally got it in my neck through taking an OCP in the 90’s (although I can’t remember which one, I changed to a different type - Marvelon which I used for years with no issues).

then during lockdown, started using retinol and had a massive reaction, which only now 3 years later, has mainly gone - through staying out of the sun, vitamin A serum and a bit of laser surgery.

I had it and then it just went, very odd

I’ve just started using Dermatica in the Hope it will shift mine. I have got quite a lot even though I wear SPF50 every day. I recently read that if you’re prone then chemical sunscreens can actually cause it to occur because how how they work and you need to use a Broad Spectrum SPF which I think means it has a mineral element too (I don’t really know).

I am similar age and had pretty clear skin all my life but for last one year, I have 2 spots of hyperpigmentation. I used Eucerin which is supposed to be excellent for this but it has not helped me.

But I have also spent my younger years not using sunscreen and not having any skin care routine, so maybe I neglected it too much. I would be interested if you find anything to help. I recently saw ad for No. 7 new range which reverses these damages due to neglect to your skin but it does not say much about pigmentation. Maybe you can go to a boots and ask a staff member.

I'd say for the next few weeks look after your skin barrier - I use LRP cicaplast Baume. Then a series of very mild peels with spf 50 and stay out the sun.

It's probably dead scaly skin that is sun damaged in patches.

Thank you all. This is a really helpful. I’ve also tried riser in when the pigmentation showed slightly and it didn’t work for me.

the comment about the correct sun cream may well be soemthinf as I’ve been religiously wearing this factor 50 cream since way feb and it’s not helped..,, thanks again I’ll keep you posted

Hydroquinone is what you need

FeelingPrickly · 06/08/2023 09:37

@TempName247 My Dermatica prescription is 0.015% tret and 4% Hydroquinone but only for 3 months then the Hydroquinone is changed for something else. 3 days in and no adverse affects at all so I have high hopes this will help.
