To call in sick

I have a cold, it’s not that bad but it’s moved to my chest and my ear and throat hurts. I’m 24 weeks pregnant, have a two year old and work full time. Work gave me some bad news yesterday about a flexible work request for after my next maternity leave which made me really quite upset.

I feel crap, tired and generally unmotivated. DC is at nursery, I have a wfh day today but all I want to do is sleep. I feel like I could sleep forever. I’ve tried to focus for the last 45 minutes or so and really struggled.

AIBU to call it a day? It seems better to give up and accept I need a sick day than to have a very unproductive wfh day.

I would! Hope you feel better soon.

Yeah call in sick and get into bed

Hesma · 04/08/2023 09:39

I would but I wouldn’t say you have a cold. Just say you have a sore throat and ear etc. Hope you feel better soon 🙂

I’m sorry to hear you feel a bit rubbish, could you have COVID as it seems to be doing the rounds again ?

You're not well; it's allowed. Better to have the sleep you need and be productive on Monday than to have an unproductive day.

It will look like you are sulking because your flexible working request was declined - sorry but that’s the way it will be perceived by your manager.

Obviously it depends on your job, but I’d be inclined to do any meetings scheduled in your diary and otherwise make yourself comfortable on your sofa and only answer any urgent emails today rather than formally take the day off.

Yes I agree that unfortunately that's the way it will look. I'd do the bear minimum and pack in early if you can

Well I partly am. Nothing like some bad news to zap the last ounces of energy out of someone who already feels crappy.

It has also made me feel less inclined to push myself for their benefit at a time when a lot of people in my position would be taking it relatively easy.

I do have a job when it would be quite easy to coast through on a wfh day but I don’t really like the dishonesty that would be required for my timesheets.
