Who helps snails

My garden has loads of snails and I help them along their path. If I see a baby snail wandering along the concrete I teleport it to a plant. Today there was a snail at the very tip of a very long leaf, so it was basically upside down. I could see it stretching it's eyes down as far as it could to try and get down to the ground beneath it, and it was coming so close but couldn't quite make it. I wasn't sure whether it would have the ability to U-turn on such a long fragile leaf, so I pressed down higher up the leaf with my finger so it could finally make contact with the ground and go on its merry way.

Does anyone else do this? I was also wondering whether it does them more harm than good to gently pull them off whatever they're on. And also, if a snail lands on its back, can it right itself?

This thread has cheered me up. I often spot snails on the path into our office and if anyone is behind me I stop and pretend to look in my bag until they pass and then move the snail out of harms way but I'll just do it openly next time - maybe one of you kind vipers will be walking behind me and smiling knowingly! 🐌

For everyone who saves tired bees - get a bee saviour card!!

https://saviourbees.co.uk/campaigns/bee-saviour-card/

They're credit card sized and contain tiny amounts of sugar water - just enough to give an exhausted bee some energy.

That Etsy shop is closed until 10th August but I will buy a bee saviour card when they’re back from hol.
I’ve also seen these keyrings which will make good little stocking fillers at Christmas ready for helping the bees next year.

I help snails but not slugs.

I help snails but not slugs.

Why’s that then?

itsnotmeitsu · 05/08/2023 22:03

I have gravel outside my back door. If there's a snail on the gravel I pick them up and pull the gravel off their underside. This makes me feel a bit ikky, but I don't feel gravel is great for them, even if I'm interrupting their journey. I then put them onto a plant nearby. I can understand why people don't like slugs and snails, and don't want them destroying their plants. But all these creatures are part of the eco-system. I stopped using slug repellants years ago when I found out what they do and, oddly,I haven't seen slugs for a long time in my garden. I also find the idea of putting salt on these creatures reprehensible. I don't use wasp spray since I realised it basically suffocates wasps, rather than killing them instantly. I have loads of bees because I have several lavender plants, and foxgloves, and I love seeing them buzzing around, gathering up the nector, and helping the human race.

Why’s that then?

Snails have a nice hard shell to pick up. Slugs are all slimy.

SoCentralRain · 06/08/2023 16:02

That's true. I use a little stick and a leaf to move them ha.

DarkModeDear · 06/08/2023 16:37

I did move a huge fat slug this morning off the path. There were lots of slime trails about, looked like it had been going around in circles and then just given up. It did move when I touched it with a big leaf so scooped it up and popped it in the border, it looked pretty dry though as it had been in full sun poor thing.

Did you know that snails have a homing instinct? I only found this out some time after I found a live snail in a bag of Tesco salad and then felt sad because I am in the west of Ireland and he/she was from Kildare which is a long way from my garden as the snail crawls.

Yes, we tested it once by painting a blob of Tippex on their shells, took a whole bunch of them (what is the collective noun for snails?) several hundred yards away down the field and waited.

A few days later, and with the help of a torch in the dark, we found some back in our garden again.

Bastards.
