To ask what position you think you’d have in the handmaids tale society?

Been rewatching recently and the whole society is so alien to me. I struggle to understand how their economy functions given that they don’t appear to have widespread internet access, manufacturing, consumerism being the norm, exports etc. However, it did make me wonder what would happen if the handmades tale society existed in the modern day UK. I would guess I’d be an econowife given I’ve never committed any of the major ‘sins’ that might make me a handmaid but myself and DH are certainly not rich, powerful or religious. My guess is that many on mumsnet would be commanders wives. I know a few individuals in real life who would revel in being aunts and commanders respectively (shudder). Aibu to ask what position you think you’d have in the Handmaids tale society?

Single mother of childbearing age so probably a handmaid.

PenguiInaThong · 03/08/2023 21:55

Divorced single mum in late 30s with fertility issues. Dead ? I'm a nurse so maybe a Martha??

MolkosTeenageAngst · 03/08/2023 21:57

I’m single and have never had children in my mid-30s so assume I wouldn’t be a handmaid but don’t think I’d make a wife either as I am not at all religious. I’m a teacher so maybe I would become a Martha or an aunt, whichever role works in the schools, but with a low birthrate presumably they have more teachers than they need and I doubt I’d be first choice as I’m not very godly and can be a bit anti authoritarian. Most likely I think I’d be an unwoman and shipped to the colonies.

GoneWithTheWin · 03/08/2023 21:58

Hmm… I’m an unmarried woman with DC (but long-term partner who is father of DC)

I’m 45 but with a regular cycle and a ‘strong’ pg and childbirth history.

so not sure whether I’d be handmaid (doubtful), econowife or banished to the colonies…

Merryoldgoat · 03/08/2023 21:59

Hmmmm. Tricky.

I’m 45 but was very fertile so I suspect I would get a few rounds as a Handmaid but I’d prefer to be an econowife.

Not a commander’s wife as my DH would deffo not be a commander 🤣

PinkPlantCase · 03/08/2023 22:04

Did they let educated women be econo wives?

Me and DH are Christian, we have children though I’m plenty young enough to have more. I don’t know if I’d be shipped off to be a handmaiden or be allowed to live my life with DH. I’m an architect so in a pretty male dominated industry, doubt they’d let me carry on practicing.

ReleasetheCrackHen · 03/08/2023 22:05

Nope. They were sent down the aunt track if they were not executed by firing squad.

Id have been smart enough to get the hell out of dodge before the lunatics took over the asylum.

Id be living my life freely in Canada.

I keep meaning to watch this all again before the final season starts.

Totally this😂

namechangenacy · 03/08/2023 22:35

Handmaiden. Second marriage. Plenty fertile but given my history probably dead in childbirth.

Slightly chilling that this is one of the "better options" on offer.

Or probably because I'm a second wife I would be working at jeezebells 😵‍💫

WhispersOfWickedness · 03/08/2023 22:42

Econowife. Handmaid if we weren't married. What I suspect though, is that DH would have got us out to Canada just before the shit hit the fan, he is very apocalypse/OFRS minded.

Seeleyboo · 03/08/2023 22:43

I have no idea. I am 50 with 5 kids but a very good cook and housekeeper. You tell me

I thought we’d already had final season?

On the wall for insubordination.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 03/08/2023 22:44

It sounds terrible to admit to, but I'd probably be a Commanders wife. I'm definitely not a Betty Draper but there's no way I could see my husband as anything but a Commander so by default...

True, it is vague about what happens to people ‘past childbearing age’ but who have had kids, and who aren’t necessarily colonies-worthy (ie acting against Gilead).

Depends. Are you married? Divorced? Is it a 2nd marriage for either partner?

I'm a total coward so would be very act against Gilead

Whats OFRS?

I tried Google and got Oxfordshire Fire And Rescue Service

TheGoogleMum · 03/08/2023 22:47

Econowife perhaps. Although DH is quite outspoken about being an atheist, so perhaps he'd be killed and I'd be a handmaid (I have 2DC)

Seeleyboo · 03/08/2023 22:47

Never#

OFRS: oh fuck rucksack (packed and ready to go)

I would be in the colonies as a divorced, menopausal single mother. Or in Canada, most likely.

AngryBirdsNoMore · 03/08/2023 22:51

I think my job means I’d have been executed early on.

Nellieinthebarn · 03/08/2023 22:51

Well I'm past child bearing age, and can turn out a decent dinner, so probably a Martha. My darling daughter would be a handmaid though as she is not married to her partner and they have two children. She's pretty outspoken and assertive so she'd not last long, and would either end up in the brothel or in the colonies. Horrible thought. Hopefully we'd escape and all be in Canada, frozen but free.

TheaBrandt · 03/08/2023 22:54

We would have left. Dh very smart and calls everything early and stays on top of politics. I am usually wrong but he is annoyingly always right.

TheaBrandt · 03/08/2023 22:55

Eg Dh fixed our mortgage for 10 years in 2018…
