Help with London trip

Planning a trip to London with my dc and I'm really nervous! I'll be going alone with him and I've never been before. Never used the tube etc. Im pretty scared but it's something I want to do and we both really want to see a west end show together.

Plan is to get the train directly into King's Cross. We'd like to see the natural history museum and a few landmarks during the day then go see a show in the evening. We'll be staying overnight. I'm thinking of booking accommodation in Covent Garden's and it's close to the big theatres.

Firstly, if we get off the train in King's Cross is the natural history museum walkable from there? And are there any other worthwhile spots in the same area? Does anyone have any good accommodation tips for Covent Garden's or nearby? Travelodge is always an option I guess.

Are there any other things you can advise or recommend for 24 hours in London? It sounds pathetic but I'm so nervous about it and really want to make it a fun trip for us both. I have a shit sense of direction and end up getting lost whenever I go anywhere new so that's not helping.

One last question...dress codes for theatres...do we need anything fancy? Are trainers allowed? Don't really want to be taking multiple pairs of shoes in my rucksack lol.

Trainers are allowed I always do the "nice top" and trousers thing to shows.

No dress code at all for theatres. I usually go in jeans and trainers with a backpack (a small one some of the older theatres don’t have a lot of legroom so you need to be able to tuck it under your seat).

Hi OP. Seeing as you're coming, might it be possible to stay several nights? There is so much in London your DS might like.

Yes, there is Camden Market, but there's also Spitalfields (just east of Liverpool St station) and the fantastic Borough Market where there's just about any food you could imagine (all very 'Insta')!

From there, you can walk along the Southbank where there's lots to see and do - Shakespeare Globe, Tate Modern, loads of cafes / restaurants, buskers etc. Tower of London is something he may like? Then get a boat down the river from there - loads of tours with commentary, or Uber run commuter boats. You get a great perspective if the city from the river.

If you are going to South Ken there is the NH Museum, but also the Science Museum and the V&A. Hyde Park is also there. It's an easy walk to Kings Rd (Chelsea) or Knightsbridge, but I'm guessing your. DS may be less interested in shopping?!

Covent Garden is always buzzing - you can also wander through China Town and Soho very easily.

If in doubt, get an Uber! That's what I always say. Do you have the Uber app on your phone? The benefit here is you see more if the city as you go, as opposed to being underground.

There's no dress code at all for theatres. They survive on people who have come from sightseeing all day or from work.

Jeans, T-shirt, backpack is probably most of the audience.
