AIBU to shut down the idea of a camping holiday?

A friend wants to go away with me on a U.K break. I'm more than happy to go alone but I don't mind going as a pair. The trouble is that she'll only ever sleep under canvas on holiday and I'd sooner be flayed alive. She's already looking at camping grounds and I said I'll be in a hotel/BnB but She still keeps sending me details of camping grounds. AIBU to say that I won't be going at all if it involves camping.

I've no intention of stopping her from camping, we could meet up but I camped once and despised it and have vowed never again so I'm certainly not doing it for a second time.

AIBU to suggest that we just meet up during the day or go our separate ways?

Could you compromise and rent a shepherds hut or similar, something on a site but not a tent. Not sure where you are looking but stayed in a lovely one in the Peak District near hathersage in the grounds of a pub

Saying that, we have stayed here, is genuinely luxurious, en-suite, hot tub proper bed etc

For £225 a night at the weekend why when you could get a hotel for much less

I have never tried camping as I just know 100% I’d hate it.

I like my home comforts too much and refuse to use shared toilet/ shower facilities.

I have however been talked into staying in a pod in the woods and LOVED it! It was hardly roughing it though - it was a solid wooden structure with central heating, en-suite bathroom and shower, own kitchen, electricity, TV. Internet etc.

We got an amazing clear view of the stars from our balcony and saw fixes, hedgehogs and owls roaming around.

BreadInCaptivity · 03/08/2023 17:58

Of course you're not unreasonable.

It's not my thing either and if I want a holiday I don't want to have to invest in gear I'll never use again just to make it barely tolerable.

Sometimes it can be surprisingly fun to do things slightly out of one's comfort zone

Ladybug14 · 03/08/2023 18:11

It's your holiday. You're paying for it. Do exactly what you want to do

I wouldn't want to go on holiday with someone like your 'friend'. No boundaries, no respect.

ghostyslovesheets · 03/08/2023 18:14

I love camping - this time next week I'll be in Anglesey in a field with compost toilets and no electric!

BUT I would NEVER insist someone who hated it MUST join me - neither of my adult kids come now - wouldn;t be seen dead without their home comforts - DD3 is not as keen - I go alone most of the time!

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 03/08/2023 18:15

Camping's not a holiday, it's an endurance test. So it would be a hard no from me.

Exactly @Sigmama - so the OP’s friend can stay in a hotel and be outside her comfort zone.

I hate camping and also refuse to do it. Your friend sounds annoying - you’ve told her “no” and she keeps pushing it.

You could hire a nice cabin with tv wifi power shower and appliances and she can pitch her tent in the grounds!
Thats what id do.

That’s what I’d do

Those pods look lovely, but I struggle to see how they are 'glamping'. I guess they have the 'glam' part, but no link to the camping part of glamping whatsoever! They're basically a very small holiday cottage. And £225 per night too...

I'm a big fan of camping (4 nights MAX), and partial to a spot of glamping too. But for that money I'm in a nice boutique hotel/B&B somewhere.

Totally agree @ReviewingTheSituation
They are chalets, not tents.

Astronomically priced chalets at that.

ohtobeme · 03/08/2023 18:21

I love camping
Don't see why we have to stay in the exact same place ?

Ericaequites · 03/08/2023 18:45

Life under canvas is making yourself voluntarily homeless. Camping is miserable for me.

blackbeardsballsack · 03/08/2023 18:52

How self absorbed of her to just keep ploughing on with her plan for you to both camp when you've been very clear that you don't want to. That would wind me up, I would actually just blank any messages relating to camping.

MadCatLady27 · 03/08/2023 19:19

Absolutely no way would I be camping I do not do camping and want a proper hotel room

Would you stay in one of the fixed caravans at a holiday park and she can pitch her tent in said park too?

If not I'd be staying at a proper hotel and telling her you'll be meeting her in the day for activities then returning to your nice comfy bed and proper bath in the day!

Yes I get it, but it does feel very special, has that outdoors feel and amazing view, fire pit hot tub etc, we've been with friends where we pay monthly to an account so doesn't feel OTT, and our kids are older do we'd have to get 2 rooms wherever we go, these sleep 4 comfortably

You don’t actually have to do something to know you’ll hate it. I’ve never shot myself in the face, but I can reasonably assume that I’m not going to find it an enjoyable leisure activity.

YANBU OP, fuck that.

I'm stealing this 😂
