Anyone know much about blood sugars?

I ate breakfast this morning at 7am (a bowl of Shreddies with a teaspoon of sugar) and a coffee.

Got to work 45 minutes later and felt so drowsy, lethargic, going dizzy, couldn’t think straight so I tested my blood glucose - 5.4mmols

I’ve really struggled all day, I just can’t think properly, I feel so so tired. Shouldn’t my blood glucose have been higher than that after a sugary breakfast?

AIBU to think I might be diabetic? Can’t get a blood test done until next month so until then … was this a normal level or should I be worried? My grandmother (on both sides actually) is diabetic. I’m 42.

5.4mmol is a completely normal reading and you shouldn't have any low blood sugar symptoms. Maybe get your bloods checked to make sure you're not low in iron or something. Or maybe you might be coming down with something?

Yes, I agree, I forgot to mention the whole iron thing on my post. That can be a culprit for those sort of symptoms.

FrenchBullFrog · 03/08/2023 14:23

Ah now, I am actually anaemic. I’ve just had an unusually long and heavy period so maybe that has caused my iron levels to crash further?

you've eaten refined/processed carbs (shreddies) with sugar and both of these will send your blood sugar levels through the roof, naturally followed by a blood sugar crash, which is when most people reach for a mid morning sugary/carby snack which will cause levels to fly high, then crash yet again. You would be better off having eggs or cheese or other protein for breakfast. Listen to this

If you had diabetes your blood sugar would be much higher. 5.4 is normal after breakfast. You maybe have a virus making you feel a bit off?

What, designed for staff to test their blood sugar? What for?

That’s irrelevant. The kit is there and I used it. The thread isn’t about whether I should have used it or not

I know a lot about blood sugars OP and 5.4mmols is completely in range, even after a carby breakfast because if you don't have diabetes (as you clearly don't) your body will have detected the carbs you ate and released the correct amount of insulin to 'unlock' the energy from those carbs for your body to use therefore stopping your blood sugar rocketing sky high.

If you had T1D no (or a minimal amount of) insulin would have been released and your blood sugar would have been way over 10 mmols when you tested it.

This is very true @ParisP Lots of sugar/carbs isn't good for anyone and especially for breakfast.

That sounds more likely, based on what you describe. Low iron can feel like all your energy has been sucked out by a giant hoover (well to me anyway!).

Motomum23 · 03/08/2023 14:30

Sounds like insulin resistance... you are spiking your blood sugars and its dropping fast as a result. When I had gestational diabetes my bloods would plummet like that after eating cereal, 2 hours after eating they would be at 2mmol. Insulin resistance can lead to t2 diabetes so worth keeping a check on what you are eating so you don't develop it. Putting sugar in your cereal for eg is something you can easily stop doing.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 03/08/2023 17:08

It's actually low 45 minutes after eating especially as a teaspoon of sugar hits your blood immediately
Did you eat normally yesterday?
I don't think it's necessary to see GP yetAs you obviously have access to a blood glucose monitor check regularly to see how your levels fluctuate
Normal range is between 4-7( up to 10 an hour after eating)

Ok, so you’re stealing from your workplace. Assuming you are in sort of healthcare role - having access to the tests - then surely you should know what the results mean.

KAM1997 · 03/08/2023 17:12

Hi, my daughter is a type 1 diabetic. This reading is totally normal.

If you was a diabetic your glucose would be high not low. Anything over 11, 2 hours after eating would be a confirmation if diabetes

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 03/08/2023 17:27

Are you treating the anaemia? 5.4 is boringly normal for blood sugar.

I have heavy periods and take two ferrous fumarate at night before bed.

Balloonsandroses · 03/08/2023 17:30

That is a completely normal blood sugar and in no way indicates diabetes.

toappleornottoapple · 03/08/2023 18:27

Normal blood sugar is 4-7mmol/ls so that readiness completely normal.

Really? I work in healthcare and if I had a colleague (or indeed a visitor or anyone else) who became dizzy and drowsy I would immediately check their blood sugar levels along with other vitals. It is in no way considered stealing and would be inappropriate not to rule out low blood sugar with those symptoms. There are plenty of people working in healthcare settings who aren't medically trained.

MissHoollie · 03/08/2023 21:30

There are lots of other blood sugar disorders other than diabetes.
