happyhearts · 02/08/2023 14:07

I have had constant cold sores for about 6 months if you have had this did it ever stop and what helped?
Taking lysine supplements and Dr has given me 5 days aclovyr.
I think it is too much kissing but I've finally got a boyfriend after 8 years of being single so I don't want to stop that!!

I got antibiotics and have one of those machines that sort of burns it

happyhearts · 02/08/2023 14:12

Thank you I'll have a look at the machine not heard of that.

100% sure it's coldsores?
Dd was misdiagnosed and incorrectly treated for months when her cold sores turned out to be impetigo.

HousePlantNeglect · 02/08/2023 14:18

I used to get cold sores all the time and then gradual lay over about the last 5-10 years I just stopped getting them. Now I get about one a year if that.

Lysine did work for me. It definitely stopped them coming as much and when they did the severity was much less and they cleared up quicker.

Im not sure if it's a coincidence but the other thing that happened at the same time was lifestyle changes. I stopped burning the candle at both ends, improved my diet, reduced my alcohol intake, and started taking a multivitamin. My cold sore trigger is being run down and so if I avoid that I seem to avoid the cold sores.

my sympathies though, they are miserable.

happyhearts · 02/08/2023 14:18

Thank you I'll google that - is impetigo painful?

I'm usually run down when I get them so definitely check your sleep, take your vitamins, try and eat well. They suck, I have one now and it's crap so my sympathies!

Thank you I'll google that - is impetigo painful?

Yes it was painful and swollen, just round her mouth.

We had to go and see a dermatologist for the correct diagnosis.

What toothpaste do you use?
People also a

A common toothpaste ingredient called Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) can for some cause Cold sores.

Mine stopped when I changed to a non SLS toothpaste.

DH takes aciclovir daily non stop (you can get it online from Superdrug). He no longer suffers with cold sores. Also try liquorice lip balm and avoid nuts as they can be triggering.

Howvery · 03/08/2023 01:57

I used to get them constantly, any hint of being run down and they would be there. I started to use liquorice lip balm from the skin shop two years ago, use it every morning and night. Not had one since.

PearTreeBoat · 03/08/2023 05:25

I suffer horrendously with cold sores. Was getting an outbreak at least once or twice a month and was always multiple cold sores at a time. I had a really severe outbreak a few years ago where the entire bottom of my mouth and chin were just completely covered in them, the nerve pain that time was unbelievable.
Doctors eventually agreed this wasn't normal and following blood tests was diagnosed with pernicious anaemia. I am now on a daily 500mg of valacyclovir (sp?), this has helped massively. I now only get outbreaks every few months and mainly from extreme weather changes or being particularly run down. When I get an outbreak I take 5 x 500mg daily and this definitely speeds up the recovery of them.

ADHDDDDDDDBOOM · 03/08/2023 07:09

Have you got a pic?

my "cold sore" was there for months and ended up being impetigo.

happyhearts · 04/08/2023 09:52

Thank you so much everyone some really helpful things to look into I really appreciate the posts!

I had coldsores every couple of weeks for a few years. As well as the sores themselves, I felt like I had flu all the time, with swollen glands and exhaustion. It was dreadful. I couldn’t kiss my husband for sometimes months at a time. I tried Lysine but it didn’t help.
My doctor prescribed Acyclovir which I now take twice a day every day. As long as I don’t miss a dose I rarely get a cold sore now.
Be careful kissing your new boyfriend - you don’t want to infect him too.
And be really really REALLY careful around babies. My friend’s baby died at a few days old after contracting the cold sore virus. Never kiss a baby you have a cold sore.

TheIsleOfTheLost · 04/08/2023 10:41

I take the l lysine and put on licorice lip balm every night when I go to bed so it is on for longer. Not sure which of them is working, but my cold sores have massively reduced in number. Keep hydrated and stop lips getting dry in the day too, as that is definitely something that sets mine off. Too much sun does too, but that has not been an issue lately!

Stratocumulus · 04/08/2023 10:49

It’s because you’re run down.
Get more sleep.
Eat a proper fresh food diet. Cut out junk/beige low nutrition food.
Take zinc tablet every day. It’s good for your immune system.

Don’t kiss your BF or give him oral whilst you are infected. If he gets a cold sore & gives you oral you will be very miserable if the virus transfers down there.

AmbleInAnnBoleyn · 04/08/2023 12:26

Hello gang, can you tell me the brand of licorice lip balm please and where you buy it. Thank you.

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 04/08/2023 12:52

Aciclovir - from Superdrug. It’s the only thing that works. You have to pay a little extra for an online prescription / consultation thingy. But I can’t remember as I did it ages ago. I used to be plagued with them whenever I was tired. Which was always. I haven’t had one for years now. At the slightest tingle I bash 1,000 mg and then it never materialised.

RoyalImpatience · 04/08/2023 13:08

Don't forget compeed plasters can help if you feel tingly as well.

What is aclovor?

Re kissing babies unfortunately they can be infections just be gore they appear so really no one who is prone to them should be kissing babies on the mouth.

AmbleInAnnBoleyn · 04/08/2023 14:16

Thank you so much, thumbs up, much obliged, Howvery.

Mary46 · 04/08/2023 14:50

Feel for you they awful. Had few myself hard shift them. Ok at moment!

reelcat · 04/08/2023 19:31

The liquorice lipbalm didn't work for me but keeping my lips hydrated with Nixe reve de miel lipbalm if the only thing that keeps them at bay for me. I rarely get them now but used to get them loads

orangegato · 04/08/2023 19:39

ALWAYS get mine on my period, no other time, and when I get them the PMS is way worse than the times I don’t get a cold sore. Sleep, nutrition and avoiding burnout help but so hard to keep up!
