British kids / families abroad

I've read a lot of negativity on here about British kids, so just wanted to balance that out with what I've seen on holiday in Crete for the past week and a half.

I have seen a bit of "bombing"in the (family) pool and quite a bit of running around in the pool area, a bit of shouting / happy screeching but that's it. And honestly a lot of those kids will have been other nationalities too
In the restaurants the British kids have been well behaved the whole time - a few have had devices or colouring, yes, but not all by a long shot and they have all stayed at their tables and been well behaved. Contrast that with a few French speaking families we've come across - who have let their kids get down and run around in (outside) restaurants. We were in one at the sea front the other day and a bunch of kids kept running through all the tables, knocking into chairs, nearly knocking trays off the waiters and actually climbing on the wall that separated the restaurant from a maybe 5 or so foot drop to the beach. This was right by our table while their parents ignored them completely. They were aged between about 4 and 11, and were shoving each other on the wall, then one climbed over and was literally hanging off the wall by her fingers. Her parents ignored and we had to intervene so that she didn't fall!
In the end I asked them to please stop running around and crashing into us. Their parents got a bit huffy I think and left (yay!)
So I'm not meaning to slag off French families here but just wanted to add a bit of balance from what we've seen here because I have read a lot of threads about how awfully behaved British kids are and why can't they be more like the French!

I've never understood categorising children according to their nationalities - shitty people raise shitty children and that's pretty universal.

We were kept awake on holiday last year by the French family from hell. Loud family japes with whoops and yells (mainly by the dad) going on involving what sounded like a dozen kids well into the night.

Many on here love making out that the British are singularly oafish, but it doesn’t really stand up to scrutiny.

Wahwahwahwahwah · 02/08/2023 13:26

I'm sure most French families and kids are well behaved as well to be fair. I'm not saying that isn't the case but I don't like reading all the threads about how horrible British kids are. That really isn't my experience.
Just to add we're at a water park today and a couple of British boys of about 13 or 14 have helped my 8 year old twins carry their inflatables up the stairs about 10 times, happily. I've said I'll do it and they just say "no that's ok. We can help"
I don't suppose this thread will get much interest though because it tends to be the ones slagging people off that do!

what is the point of this? A vote to see what nationality the worst behaved children we met on holiday were?

Every country has millions of children - do you expect millions of children to be the same? There will be a huge range of behaviour in every nationality

Seems a strange thing to feel competitive about.

Wahwahwahwahwah · 02/08/2023 13:34

Aha and here is the negativity 😂. No of course that wasn't my point. I just wanted to stick a positive experience of British kids out into the ether because I always read bad stuff about them

I get you OP. Most MN holiday threads DO talk about how perfect other children are and how disruptive British children are in comparison.

When the truth is, children are well behaved and misbehaved the world over

We are on holiday with a 4 year old, honestly expected her to need her fire tablet at meal times so we brought it along every evening in my bag. She hasn't used it once! Happily sits down and eats with us for well over an hour a time. Lovely surprise for us, but I really wouldn't have cared what other people thought if she'd sat there with her headphones on!

She is the last of several dc and they've all grown up and become respectable soon to be adults who can hold a conversation!

Also agree op it's good to balance it out

We've just come back from a lovely little hotel on Sorrento and there were several young British families whose children weren't so well behaved - clearly having a ball in the pool but respectful of others around them too. Also lovely in the restaurant at dinner too which was a 4 course sit down affair. Some devices and colouring going on but alsmoet all the kids put them away when their food was out. It was lovely to see.

The Italian family and Dutch family that sat near us where a different kettle of fish. Pretty much came to dinner - which in the brochure clearly stated a reasonable dress code for the restaurant - in their damp pool gear.
