To not get the point of Apple TV

autienotnaughti · 02/08/2023 06:14

I've just signed up for 3 month's free of Apple TV . Apart from a handful of tv shows such as hijack, it most seems to be pay for content? Or a piggyback to other viewing platforms like ITV hub which is free anyway? And it doesn't even get rid of the ads. Do people really pay £7 a month to watch a small handful of American tv shows?

Apple TV acts like the master app, it will have their own shows in one menu, then other content which is available on other streaming apps, I think you can set up which ones you have so it only shows you those.

It also has a space to 'rent' new movies, and also has anything you previously'purchased' from the Olsen days of iTunes - I found my old seasons of Friday night lights hiding in there 😂

This is great to know. I must also have 2 seasons of Friday Night Lights hiding on there somewhere...

I think you are looking at the general access content. Filter by ‘apple originals’ and have a look. Very few misses on original content and a lot of hits. I love apple content. in addition to @tulippa’s list I’d Recommend:
Severance
defending jacob
servant
physical
shrinking
shining girls
wecrashed
Tehran
for all mankind
suspicion
the last thing he told me
liaison
the morning show
slow horses

If you’d asked me a couple of years ago why I had it, it was only because I got a free subscription with a new Apple product. Now I won’t be cancelling my subscription unless for budgeting reasons. I’ve seen so many of these above and on @tulippa list.
Slow Horses and Bad Sisters are worth the subscription alone.

NeedToThinkOfOne · 02/08/2023 12:12

Also meant to say, they drop by weekly episodes so you’re lucky having so many full sets yet to watch …the current struggle waiting week to week for next ep of Hijack is real😖

userxx · 02/08/2023 12:16

Does anyone know if the latest season of Physical has fully aired yet?

misskatamari · 02/08/2023 12:17

There are some fantastic shows on there! We’ve really enjoyed everything we watched. Especially loved For all mankind! And Severance is fantastic!

Netaporter · 02/08/2023 13:19

@userxx no starts today. Eps 1 & 2 available only

evtheria · 02/08/2023 13:22

We've just finished our free trial, we enjoyed:
Slow Horses
Bad Sisters
Home (series on homes people have built all over the world)

My DS loved:
The new Fraggle Rock
Harriet the Spy cartoon series
Wolfboy cartoon series

Lemonyfuckit · 02/08/2023 13:26

There's some good recommendations on here which I haven't seen eg Silo, Severance, thank you.

I would say if you like dramas their original content is excellent, and really slick and stylish to boot. We loved Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Bad Sisters, Slow Horses and enjoying Hijack at the moment so will take a look at the other recommendations on here.

mizu · 02/08/2023 13:35

I wasn't sure about Apple TV but wanted to watch Silo so signed up for 7 days free. Then wanted to watch Bad Sisters, then saw they had The Mosquito Coast, Defending Jacob and more. So I have signed up - and dropped Disney+ which i originally got for the Star Wars stuff.

Apple TV - as someone else says on here- doesn't have all the crap you have to wade through to find what you want to watch.

mizu · 02/08/2023 13:36

I didn't realise there was a pay for option too!

Thank you! Will leave it 6 weeks or so.

There's loads of good stuff on there: Severance, Bad Sisters, Blackbird, Silo, Five Days at Memorial, Ted Lasso (DH liked this more than me), The Big Door Prize, The Essex Serpent... We didn't have to pay any extra for those. I would say Apple TV and Sky Atlantic are my go to places for good dramas.

Totally worth the fee to see how hot Taron Edgerton is in Blackbird

Thisismynewusername1 · 02/08/2023 14:23

The biggest plus for me is I can search for something and Apple TV will find it and take me to that platform.

so much easier than searching separately on Netflix, Amazon, Disney, now etc. I must have saved hours of trying to find stuff.

we keep it for the amazing Apple Originals though. Some seriously good stuff.

escapingthecity · 02/08/2023 14:30

In your trial period I'd really recommend watching The Morning Show, Ted Lasso, Slow Horses, Shrinking and For All Mankind. All brilliant. Have just started Silo which I'm looking forward to getting further into as well.

Skyrim41 · 02/08/2023 14:58

Silo is the best TV show I've watched in about 7 years it's absolutely amazing. Can't wait to read the books!

Ted Lasso and Shrinking share the same writer - both great but Ted Lasso wins by a mile for me

marblemad · 07/08/2023 14:21

I'm convinced you don't actually have apple tv because I've never had to pay for extra content and the original content is well worth the price monthly

I'm currently watching hijack (very good)

If you select (for example) Where the crawdads sing. Is it free for you?

The ads was when I put itv+ on via the app. I thought it might be a way to bypass the ads but it's not.

OneFrenchEgg · 07/08/2023 17:11

Every time I get apple I hate it. A few good shows and all the faff of searching for free stuff

SchoolQuestionnaire · 07/08/2023 17:26

I didn’t actually realise there was pay extra content on Apple TV.

We’ve only had it a short while but I’ve loved everything we’ve seen so far. We’ve only watched Slow Horses, Black Bird, Ted Lasso and Shrinking and have just started The Morning Show but I don’t generally watch much tv so that’s honestly more than I’ve watched over the entire year before that and probably last year too! I think the content seems far better than Netflix or Disney Plus or terrestrial tv which I can’t seem to get into no matter how much I try.

User265438765 · 07/08/2023 17:28

Where the Crawdads sing is on Sky Cinema for subscribers so wouldn't generally be free on another platform

You definitely can't bypass ITVx ads by the app on Apple TV and if you are watching American series on ITVx, even if you pay on ITVx you will still get adverts, it's in the small print.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/08/2023 17:36

Ted Lasso is the point of Apple TV.

Olika · 07/08/2023 17:40

I had 3 month trial too and watched two documents and cancelled it as I didn't get it either.

Netaporter · 08/08/2023 05:54

I know what you mean @autienotnaughti but you need to search in the ‘apple+’ button at the top of the screen if you are using the apple box or watching on an iPad. Then filter through to ‘Apple Originals’. I use the box to watch itvx. There is no way to escape the ads on itvx exclusive content but if you want to watch say Love island and have sky you can search and download the show, it’ll be ad free.
