Do ottoman beds break easily?

Buying a new bed for our new house and desperately need all the storage I can get and so I was going to go for an ottoman bed with under bed storage but my mum says everyone she knows has had their ottoman bed break (including her own).

Do ottoman beds break easily/quickly?

YABU - yes they break easily
YANBU - no they don't break easily

I have always had divan beds with built in drawers. At least then you can easily access things without removing all the bedding. I'm not sure I would trust an Ottoman mechanism on a bed especially with young children around.

Never heard of a child injury with an ottoman, you would take the obvious care and not leave open with kids unsupervised, young kids are unlikely to be able to lift themselves. The gas lifts in ours control and hold the bed in position firmly.

DS1s did but he's a big lad and tends to throw himself on beds and sofas ( broke the sofa once too)

I love my ottoman bed!! My dc don't know that the mattress lifts up so all Christmas gifts etc get hidden under there...so much easier than the loft!!

Ours broke quickly - it's still fine for my husband to open, and for us to sleep on. But it used to have some kind of special piston thing which made it feel light to open and that bit broke. So now it weighs a tonne to open. We wouldn't want to be going into it often (we mostly store suitcases in there).

Having said that, I wouldn't change it. The storage space is invaluable.

I'm about to order an ottoman. This is genius!

@RightSaidFred72 means I have to be careful that they aren't going to walk in while I am changing the sheets or lifting it up but as they are 15 and 18 I find doing these things first thing in the morning means they are fast asleep Wink

My DD and I have both the single and double ones from IKEA and they are rock solid. My DD opens and closes hers every 5 mins and no problems at all.

15yo DD has had one for 6 years and I know that girl jumps on it like a trampoline even now so... if it's survived that I think it'll do!

We got one about 15 years ago and it has been taken apart about 5 times. Still going strong. It was expensive as they were quite a new idea but can’t remember the brand.

I've had one for 8 years and it's survived my DP taking it apart and putting it back together for 2 house moves. Which is quite the testament to it's hardiness.
