To sweat after a 20 minute walk

I did a brisk 20 minute walk earlier to the local station, just over a mile away, to catch a train. By the time I got there I had visible sweat on my nose and a bit on my back. It’s quite cool in London today but I looked up the humidity via BBC weather and it’s 76%. Strange as it doesn’t feel especially muggy.

My question is, is it normal to be this sweaty?! I’m feeling very self conscious about it.

Oh, and sweat on my cheeks and forehead as well 😟

I assume you took off any layers when you started feeling warm?

Uncooperativefingers · 01/08/2023 09:56

It all depends on the effort you were putting in tbh. But yes, if I walked quickly for 20 mins in humid weather I'd expect to sweat a bit.

Also, some are sweater than others. I never really get sweat on my face, but my back definitely does.

julylover · 01/08/2023 09:56

I was only wearing a T-shirt and jeans!!

Depends on the conditions, the speed you were walking, your general level of sweatiness, your weight, your general level of fitnesss.

julylover · 01/08/2023 09:58

I’m not overweight and generally walk a mile or two a day, at a normal pace. So not unfit but not a gym bunny either!

I've got sweatier on walks as I've got older

Just checked and I misread the humidity - it was in fact 73%. Still sounds very high considering it doesn’t feel humid.

I'm generally a 'cold' person, and can have cold hands but get sweaty arm pits quite easily if I'm walking. I don't have to be doing a particularly brisk walk.

Maybe you were just walking faster than you thought, or it more humid than the weather forecast says.

julylover · 01/08/2023 10:04

I’m guessing it’s not normal as I don’t notice other people with visible sweat on their faces 😕

I was out for a walk/lunch with a friend yesterday and walking back home we both commented on how muggy it was, also got a bit of "a glow" on
I've been walking a lot more recently and have noticed on days that you would think were warm no visible sweat but it seems to be the humidity & no breeze that makes the difference.

Some people sweat more than others. Sometimes it's fitness or weight related, sometimes it's hormonal or physiological.
I've always been a sweater. Even in my super skinny teens and 20s. I can break a sweat with minimal effort, and after a hardcore workout I can actually see the steam rising. I'm fit, active, healthy weight, ideal BMI. My Ddad is the same and he was a semi-pro athlete so it's not down to a lack of fitness for us - we just overheat easily and sweating is our way of not boiling from the inside.
I've had to find ways to cope and have got less self conscious as I've got older.

Do you sweat normally I think is what you need to ask yourself. It doesn't really matter if other people do.

julylover · 01/08/2023 10:19

I also sweat in situations where I’m very nervous or anxious (such as before a job interview for example).

Right, but do you normally sweat when you do the same ish walk? You have said you walk regularly, so do you sweat when doing so?

If you do it's normal for you.

If you don't you are wearing too many clothes or coming down with something.

itsmylife7 · 01/08/2023 10:25

Totally normal for some people, I include myself in this.

Many years ago I used to do zumba classes at the gym. I had head and wrist sweat bands. 😁
Eventually had to stop as the sweat made my face come up in a rash. All the others were sweat free 🙄

I just feel so self conscious about it when I’m with friends or at work! I mean it normally disappears after a while, but in the summer I’m often visually sweating when I arrive at work or at a cafe to meet friends. Anyone else?!

That was me last summer, I was really conscious of a sweaty brow when meeting a friend in London last summer (thankfully they had booked a well air-conditioned restaurant)
Things came to a head in the autumn when I also started getting a high heart rate and slight shaking.
Turns out I had an overactive Thyroid, once treated all was fine.

OCDmama · 02/08/2023 11:43

Blinking makes me break a sweat!

I can't really wear t-shirts anymore as I get so hot, just vests.

I'm slim and fit though. I'm just quick to sweat and have been quite warm for the last 4 years (I spent my early twenties being cold). I have spent the last few years being pregnant/breastfeeding so put it down to that.

I'm just calling it practice for the menopause.

ManateeFair · 02/08/2023 11:48

People sweat in vastly different amounts. What you're describing is totally within the normal range :)

I'm exactly the same. I hate it and am also super self-conscious about it, but ultimately it's not considered 'excessive sweating' from a medical perspective so I have to accept it as 'just one of those things'. But I feel for you because I know exactly what it's like.

GreyCarpet · 02/08/2023 11:56

I sweat easily. I also overheat and become unbearably cold ar temperatures others can tolerate. I just don't manage my temperature very well.

I played a gig at the weekend. It wasn't particularly warm and you can see the sweat literally dripping down my face on my face in the videos. The other guys were absolutely fine. None of the people dancing were sweating particularly either - was a full on mosh too! Just me. In full view for everyone to see. Lovely 🤣

Gherkingreen · 02/08/2023 14:39

Same here @GreyCarpet - Raynaud's when it's cold or I'm in the freezer aisle and like a boiled frog when it's hot or I exercise. It's genetic I reckon, my dad is the same - we reckon our internal thermostats are knackered.
