Overweight Brits abroad

1000 replies

Artyfart · 01/08/2023 08:57

I know this will upset people but it’s time to face facts and I’m talking about myself here too. Just got back from second holiday abroad this year when once again it was painfully noticeable how overweight British people are compared to our European neighbours. We stand out a mile! Every time I saw someone fat I’d wait for it and…. British accent. We look a state and it’s time to do something about it. No wonder the NHS is on its knees. I came back more determined than ever to lose weight.

The NHS is crumbling because of chronic underfunding for decades and the use of private third parties. Nevermind fat people daring to exist, I'm fed up of people blaming whatever flavour of person they feel like today for destroying the NHS when it's the government doing this.

Here’s the answer OP, you just need to be more middle class.

This is so true.

but at the same time there could be an honest conversation about why society is so obesogenic and whether everyone is prepared to do something about that.

Polis · 01/08/2023 10:00

We need societal change alongside it.

What would that involve?

ArcaneWireless · 01/08/2023 10:00

Artyfart · 01/08/2023 09:49

🤣 yeah ALL I did all holiday is stare at fat people!

Yet that is what your post implied. Yeah?

What a judgy post... can't say I've noticed the same

If you are looking for overweight people try the US

Oh the absolute irony 😂

ArcaneWireless · 01/08/2023 10:00

Yet that is what your post implied. Yeah?

It was clearly an observation made whilst engaging in nice, normal holiday activities. Quite silly to suggest otherwise

I've gone from a ten mile a day walking, yoga practising size 10 to a practically sedentary, unable to walk to the bathroom some days because of the pain size 20 since I was diagnosed with and autoimmune disease medicated in part with steroids.

No doubt the OP and all the other fatty-batterers who'll be along to pontificate with her would look at me and tut because I'm clearly so greedy and lazy. Extra tuts if I'm using my walking stick that day because obviously I'm disabled due to my weight.

Yep. I used to run 2 miles to the pool, swim a mile and run home and then have an active day too, before I got ill.

I am "lucky". Steroids gave me Cushings -leaving me barely able to get out of bed- and I had to taper off them rapidly and switch to other meds. But, knowing how rapidly I gained weight on them and how rapidly I am losing it as I taper off them, it makes me very angry that there isn't more honest conversation in the NHS about the impact of medication on weight gain. It's disgusting that people are judged for the side effects of prescribed medicine. More expensive medication for my condition doesn't come with a side effect of rapid weight gain

However, my new meds (the next cheapest, undoubtedly) are causing me to lose my hair. Presumably op and others will deem my baldness to be my fault too.

Enjoyed this hugely 🤣🤣

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 01/08/2023 10:04

If you’re fat and it bothers you, lose weight. I don’t think it’s on you to call every other overweight British person a state though, being fat yourself you must know they may have medical issues contributing to weight gain, they may not be capable of much exercise, they may have eating disorders or other physical or emotional struggles. Even I can see how disgusting it is to call those that are overweight names and attempt to shame them.

Triptastico · 01/08/2023 10:04

Freeand · 01/08/2023 09:30

Sounds like the shittest holiday ever just hovering around fat people waiting for them to speak.

GrinGrinGrin

and waiting for scruffy people to speak too. What weird holidays.

You forgot one

why do brits complain about the weather

Largeslice · 01/08/2023 10:05

What about the Brits who drink the bars dry every year? Or lay out in the sun without protection?

If you're looking to demonise a social group you should at least attack all those that put strain on the NHS. Not just us fatties

Maireas · 01/08/2023 10:05

Obesogenic - I've learned a new word today.

Tell me you don't understand correlation and causation without... et cetera.

Tell me that you don’t understand that correlation doesn’t equal causation.

Or that you don’t keep up to date with scientific research.

Or that you don’t know how to quickly find information from google.

“Across Europe, being overweight or obese affects 8% of children under five and one in three children of school age. According to the study, of all European countries the UK ranks fourth for having the most overweight and obese adults, behind Israel, Malta and Turkey.”

Just a minor point of pedantry, but when did Israel get moved to Europe?

ArcaneWireless · 01/08/2023 09:13

Interesting.

Whether it be a first post or nc for this particular post.

That is what is painfully noticeable for me.

You can tell what posts are created through chatGBT by those types of phrasing. It’s not common linguistics

Yes, already a thread about Brits complaining about weather.

Unfortunately it is true that Britain is among the most overweight nations in Europe.

We're actually not that bad for alcohol consumption compared to Europe and the other two items on your list are more subjective.

ArcaneWireless · 01/08/2023 10:06

@RageRage

I couldn’t agree with your first couple of sentences more.

I'm fat. Spent twenty years on steroids so I could work and pay huge tax. I am now so ill I have finally got my temper up re insults from others. It has taken me 18 months to lose 16kg. Mumsnet posters love to 'harpoon' us biggies. (see the thread about the poor woman who felt ugly or the lady with a size 12 daughter) It must be our fault! Sometimes it isn't. My illnesses are autoimmune, just genetics.
I was in Italy just before Christmas and nobody was rude. I didn't notice different sizes just well dressed people. In the UK I get shouted out and people assume I am stupid. No one wants to carry extra weight and it is not anyone else's business to assume it is costing the NHS money.

So sorry to hear your weight gain was caused by steroids too.

Yes, like you, I accepted the medication so I could still work (and pay tax).

There needs to be a big conversation about the contribution of medication to weight gain.

The more expensive treatments for my condition don't cause weight gain....

ArcaneWireless · 01/08/2023 10:08

Aye. ‘Appen you are right.
