Overweight Brits abroad

1000 replies

Artyfart · 01/08/2023 08:57

I know this will upset people but it’s time to face facts and I’m talking about myself here too. Just got back from second holiday abroad this year when once again it was painfully noticeable how overweight British people are compared to our European neighbours. We stand out a mile! Every time I saw someone fat I’d wait for it and…. British accent. We look a state and it’s time to do something about it. No wonder the NHS is on its knees. I came back more determined than ever to lose weight.

well, I guess cheap when used as a pejorative differs from cheap when it means inexpensive, Dolly Parton's 'It costs me a lot of money to look this cheap' springs to mind😁

Bloody love Dolly ✊ !

Ilovegardens · 02/08/2023 18:55

I have to agree with OP. I've just returned from Portugal and there were several European nations represented there. The vast majority were slim and looked fit and healthy. What I also discovered was that the high fat/high sugar foods in the supermarket were far more expensive than healthier choices, this is where the gov/supermarkets are doing us a massive disservice. This is what needs to change.

You should be a Slimming World Consultant, or a Social Scientist with your indepth study.

No, honestly, I do hope you get some help for that low self esteem, or the narcissism if you're a size 10 or 12 calling yourself overweight.

Please do take my salty sarcasm and sprinkle it on your chips.

5128gap · 02/08/2023 19:06

What I don't understand OP is why you want to 'upset people'? You know perfectly well that's its holiday time. If you're a regular on here you know perfectly how many women are worried about how they will be viewed by others on holiday because of their weight. So what spiteful little corner of you is getting satisfaction from posting something you 'know will upset (overweight) people (women)'?
We could talk about your own desire to lose weight. We could talk in general about the obesity crisis. But no. It has to be about other women (because as usual, most people on here are focusing on the women) trying to enjoy themselves on holiday.

Blueblell · 02/08/2023 19:11

It’s always been this way. You forgot to say they were all sunburnt too. I think though there are a lot of healthy Brits around now too - there are many running ect so I think things are changing for some. Losing weight is life changing but it is not easy.

Ripleysgameface · 02/08/2023 19:20

Yes I agree. I live in a holiday destination and all of the Brits are huge. Fat parents and fat kids.

JenniferBooth · 02/08/2023 19:25

People who hate overweight people also berate those who are ALREADY doing something about it. The hate is THAT strong. You only have to take a look at the "DH says im in the worst shape ive ever been" thread where the DH was laughing at how she looked in her WORKOUT GEAR.

Loads of posters on that thread wanging on about obesity (we dont even know if she is overweight) and asking her "well are you overweight OP" when she was already doing something about it.

SHE WAS IN HER WORKOUT GEAR
SHE WAS IN HER WORKOUT GEAR
SHE WAS IN HER WORKOUT GEAR

Gonnawashmymouthout · 02/08/2023 19:27

Oh ffs. ANOTHER thread about how terrible it is that the UK is so fat, and the rest of Europe are perfect

Lokiswife · 02/08/2023 19:43

I'd love to lose weight, but due to a large amount of medication for various health issues, part of which also affects my mobility, I'm stuck. I also don't over-eat, if anything, I under-eat, but it makes no difference. Not everyone is overweight on purpose.

Totally agree - and what is so so sad is that fat has become the norm and obese is now thought of as just fat. Definitely a link between income and lifestyle. And a complete lack of knowledge about what they are consuming - watch a fat family having a meal out…… all high fat foods served in vast portions. Stretches their tattoos - sorry couldn’t resist

You are a bad human being.
And I'm saying that as a slim person

Millicent500 · 02/08/2023 20:01

No - just realistic . Perhaps if we were more honest about the situation it would help. I’ve encouraged several friends to lose weight and regain their self respect. We have to stop pussyfooting - it doesn’t seem to help anybody

How does gawping and giggling at overweight people eating, and making childish comments about tattoos help anybody?

I agree .. the NHS has many ailments they are having to treat because of obesity
diabetes has risen so much for a start
Heart attacks strokes cancer .. plus alcohol related issues are overwhelming them … it’s a fact .. and many nurses are overweight.. my dil said when she works nights all they do is eat junk to keep awake … she’s managed to lose some on maternity leave … It’s not being insulting it’s something of a crises this obesity issue sadly.

JenniferBooth · 02/08/2023 20:28

@Millicent500 Bet you are the sort who rolls down your car window yelling insults at bigger people excersising

If you are looking for overweight people try the US

It’s judgy to call Brits fat but it’s ok to call Americans fat…?

You see, this isn't insulting at all - identifying that nurses might be more likely to be overweight or obese and figuring out why: high stress, long hours, shift patterns, working nights etc. By working out the cause, someone can help to come up with a way to mitigate it (you'd hope). If you said nurses are all fat because they're lazy and weak-willed, that would be insulting. If you were some ignorant, ill-mannered twerp imagining she's oh so amusing making tedious comments about fat people's tattoos stretching then you'd want to worry about yourself, but your post is actually an example of a constructive conversation about weight. You aren't sneering or being gratuitously unpleasant; nor are you pretending there isn't a problem. So I'd say you're someone getting it right actually.

Millicent500 · 02/08/2023 20:31

Perhaps you live in another universe - I’m just commenting on what I see. A great percentage of our population sadly have no idea how to cook and no knowledge of nutritious and healthy ingredients. It has been scientifically proven that processed food changes metabolism causing drastic weight gain and even changes to our mental state. Go down any high street and count the number of take away places.

JenniferBooth · 02/08/2023 20:31

Perhaps the NHS need to stop being hypocrites and prescribe the alternatives to steroids that dont cause weight gain and making sure their staff have time to eat properly on shift.

willWillSmithsmith · 02/08/2023 20:31

WomblingTree86 · 02/08/2023 09:01

It's hardly a taboo subject. It’s talked non-stop on MN for example.

And attacked and wanting conversation shutting down. That makes it taboo in my books. Is it ever possible to have a considered discussion about the negative implications of being too overweight that doesn’t include the phrase Fat Shaming (MN or not MN).

Yeah, just a few posts back. You have clear-cut fat-shaming ('can't resist, stretching their tattoos') followed soon after by a post about negative implications of weight gain and the fact nurses on night shift find it hard to eat healthily and stay a healthy weight because if their working hours - no shaming involved, identifies a clear issue, gives us room to come up with a solution.

So let's shut down the sneerers like Milicent and talk about weight the way that other poster does (just as one example) with understanding and compassion rather than mocking and superiority. I don't see why that's so impossible.

We’re not paying for an NHS in the US though.
