To think kitchen roll is too expensive to use more than one sheet?

reql · 01/08/2023 07:35

I buy good kitchen roll because I find the own brand stuff to be rubbish. This means it can be 2-3 pence per sheet. I use it sparingly. I use a cloth to wipe things up, but you need kitchen roll sometimes.

DP loves the stuff. He uses multiple sheets at a time. For example, if he brought me a piece of fruit like a peach, he'd rip off two maybe three pieces of kitchen roll to use as a plate. If he spills something, he'll use a few sheets because he doesn't like the spilt food getting near his hands.

AIBU to think that this stuff, is too bloody expensive to use multiple sheets? He says I am a scrooge, and it's become a joke amongst friends not to use more than one sheet of kitchen roll.

I would say you have a better understanding of the cost of things because i suspect you’re the one doing the shopping.

Changingplace · 01/08/2023 07:37

I never ever buy kitchen roll, just use washable cloths for everything, just don’t buy it.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 01/08/2023 07:37

Maybe you can buy him a few rolls for Christmas.

M4J4 · 01/08/2023 07:38

I’m with you, OP.

I hate waste.

PerspiringElizabeth · 01/08/2023 07:40

Just use an actual cloth? I never buy kitchen roll.

DH goes thru loo roll at an astonishing rate, even though we have a bidet pipe.

I do the food shop but he buys loo roll, kitchen roll, bleach etc as he uses it up so quickly and so it’s better he keeps it stocked up so I don’t have to weep.

Sprig1 · 01/08/2023 07:40

I have never used kitchen roll in my life. Just use cloths.

PearlHandle · 01/08/2023 07:41

That's my dh!

I use cloths too and what I still call Bounty for different things but dh will release the Bounty at the drop of a hat and ream it off like a billionaire.

Then when I need some for something like cleaning the drain there is none.

I've tried hiding it and I've tried getting him his own. Obviously I've told him not to do it.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 01/08/2023 07:42

I use kitchen roll, but it's washable bamboo kitchen roll... The sheets do die eventually but last for ages and just get thrown in the washing machine.

ErniesGhostlyGoldTops · 01/08/2023 07:45

I buy blue industrial roll. I managed to get a pack of six for two pounds a roll at Lidl a few months ago. One roll will last us about three months but we mop up spills with cloths here. We compost everything too and I mean everything!

spitefulandbadgrammar · 01/08/2023 07:45

I’ve just bemoaned DP doing this on another thread! He pulls of lengths and lengths of the stuff, like a toddler alone in the bathroom discovering the loo roll spins. We’ve got mountains of tea towels and 100s of muslins leftover from the baby years he could use to soak up spills/wipe hands on. And plates to use as a plate! And basins in which to wash hands! If it were up to me we’d buy zero kitchen towel; unfortunately he does the shopping and has a dedicated kitchen towel cupboard “because it saves to buy in bulk”.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 01/08/2023 07:48

What do the people who don't ever buy it use for napkins? Surely washing those wastes more money and energy than kitchen roll?

@reql I'm with you. I buy it but I'm also stingy with it

This. There’s no need for it. Washable clothes, newspaper at if it’s something really 🤮

Use paper napkins ?!

I love kitchen towel. Costco does the best. So expensive though. I try to use cloths more.

I don't use a napkin?

Leasa241 · 01/08/2023 08:12

I also use washable cloths, I’ve not bought kitchen roll for home use in years. I do however buy 1 roll for our holiday annually but we never use the full roll so we put that in the car for emergencies. Once you stop buying it your mind set changes and you won’t miss it!

DivineLillith · 01/08/2023 08:17

@cinnamonfrenchtoast use back of my sleeve:) I’m joking obviously.

I just use cloths to wipe stuff up and they get thrown in the washing machine and I appear to manage not to smear myself in food so don’t use napkins.

EveSix · 01/08/2023 08:18

I have two rolls of kitchen roll on the go; one in the kitchen and one on the kitchen table, but I watch them like a hawk. We use half sheets for hands during sticky meals, and in the kitchen, I use a single sheet to dry surfaces after wiping down.
Decided yesterday to make cloths out of an old cotton sheet as tired of micro managing roll usage. I'll see how it goes down.

cushioncovers · 01/08/2023 08:20

Op buy the cheap stuff if he's going to pull off three or four sheets at a time anyway.

refreshingseahorse · 01/08/2023 08:22

I buy the really cheap value kind and use as many sheets as I want. The expensive one seems 'too nice' to use on cat sick / wiping frying fat out of a pan.

bunchofboys · 01/08/2023 08:25

We don't buy it. Total waste of money. Just have more cloths.

This! I eat then wash my hands. If we’re having something really messy like tacos I will use a cloth napkin but they’re hand-me-downs and go in a wash I’d be putting on anyway. Struggle to see how that’s more wasteful and energy intensive than making, wrapping in plastic, and transporting giant packets of kitchen towel.

And you will be publishing the results of this I hope.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/08/2023 08:27

I am not tight with many things. But I am as tight as anything with kitchen roll. I regularly tear a piece in half. I think it’s because it was considered posh to have kitchen roll then I was a kid and I’ve never got past that.
