To go home early from our holiday

We're currently staying in a beautiful villa in Kefalonia.
We were just relaxing with a cup of tea and heard a banging on the door.
It was the owner of the property who told us the was a large fire nearby and to leave the house immediately. She could not tell us where to go. She could not speak any English.
We left and saw a huge fire nearby. Ash was floating in the air and the area was very smoky. It was all very traumatic. We grabbed our passports and got in our rental car.
The roads were blocked and the only road lead to the sea.
I was terrified and so we're my children.
To cut a long story short, we were eventually advised by locals that the fire has been put out.
Our villa is beautiful but it is next to a small village only and has lots of forest around it.
My husband wanted to stay but I've insisted we get a flight tomorrow as I feel so anxious.
I'm currently sat in the living area, too anxious to sleep.
Am I being over the top? I need some perspective.

I still think I'd go home as the flights were booked. You also sound very chilled about losing £900. Will they let you transfer for another holiday?

This is true. Thanks.
To be honest I now don't care about being dismissed by other posters. My family are my priority and I'm going to trust my instincts.

That’s what happens when you bring things to mumsnet that don’t need to.

You made your decision and changed the tickets, so why the need to then come to mumsnet to ask and then get upset when you get opinions that differs form yours?

Just move on and do what you’re comfortable with and stop responding to people on mumsnet.

I don’t understand the point of this post if it’s already been decided you’re going home as the flights are booked??

Well there are frequent fires every year in Greece. Usually started deliberately unfortunately. They have a mobile home warning system.

we were just on an island last week that had fires. We weren’t directly at risk though,

I would stay, but have a little bag packed and head the warnings. You do get Faye warning of wild fires. Smoke in the sky etc.

The authorities are usually over rather than under various in evacuating.

I agree. I’ve been to Greece 30+ times and often seen fires. I remember being in Kefalonia watching from the balcony as the planes dropped water onto them.
I’ve also felt 4 earthquakes in various places on Greece - never once have I wanted to cut my holiday short.

As long as it is out I’d stay and enjoy, just be aware and maybe keep the main things packed. I would be a little anxious, but keen to enjoy much needed lovely time.

I live in the Mediterranean fires are a way of life it’s not life threatening and now it’s done so move on …. Last week there were 4 fires visible from my home one was so close we could feel the heat in the air my FOUR YEAR OLD checked double checked and triple checked her hose and tap should she need to respond to fire threat we have to many animals here to move so we fight until it’s on three sides then let the animals go and drive them away with the vehicles and pray … I don’t doubt it was scary but lady people live with this threat every summer and it’s usually started by a careless tourist so stay put enjoy your break it’s wet in uk

masterblaster · 02/08/2023 19:37

If it was burning and now is out, you now have a fire break.

WOULD KING LEONIDAS GIVE UP IN THE FACE OF A MERE FIRE?

JusthereforXmas · 02/08/2023 20:06

Fire cant re-burn the same space, thats why firemen do controlled burns. If its already been on fire then now your safer than before because its already burned out.

I’d be out of there too!! I’d hate to stay and risk being stranded somewhere with no where to stay and sat waiting days for a flight. Last week someone in that exact position posted, she said she was stranded in Greece and couldn’t get flights as everyone was trying to leave! Went hours on end without access to clean water! Sod that!
I wouldn’t be able to rest and I’d rather be at home safe in the rain with my family than sat out there terrified!

Morewineplease10 · 03/08/2023 10:02

I'd go home. If it was just adults maybe I'd stay. With kids, no

T1Dmama · 03/08/2023 14:14

Oh wow! Seen your update. Hope you enjoy rest of holiday and managed to transfer the £900 flights to another holiday or something

BMW6 · 03/08/2023 14:35

Well if I were you I'd take turns with DH to stay awake all night - one sleep till 3am, then the other take over.

You don't want everyone asleep with the risk of smoke inhalation.
