To feel disappointed in new job

Don't want to state what industry, but when I signed up for it I was told it would be guaranteed hours, that is also what they advertise on indeed. I was asked to give my availability (it's shifts rather than office hours) and I said I could work 5 days a week.
It's bad enough that the mandatory onboarding training is paid at below min wage and I won't receive it until I've been there for 3 months, and if I leave within x amount of months I am required to pay it back.
That's a whole other story.
Anyway, I've received my rota and I've been given 1 day's work out of 5. Honestly, I'm gutted. It's done on a week by week basis, it might be more next week. I am very fortunate to be signed up to a couple of different companies so I'll be able to get alternate income, but those are 0 hours contracts.
I was banking on this being guaranteed hours. Looking at the rota, I can see that other staff are getting daily, consistent work for the week. I think the company hires more staff than they need and would rather leave staff with no work than struggle to cover shifts.
I need to discuss this with the company tomorrow but I'm pretty upset. If it's going to be like this, I won't stay. However I feel backed into a corner now due to the training costs.

If this were somebody who didn't have another job then they would be in trouble. It's wrong to do this and not be very upfront about it.

I should speak to acas.

How many hours did they say would be 'guaranteed hours'?

Ryvitas · 31/07/2023 23:01

You were able to choose. I chose 35. They could offer a minimum of 20 up to 45 apparently. I was naive tbh.

Not sure what to do. How will they recoil hundreds in training costs if I don't even earn hundreds from them?

Not really following. You could choose how many guaranteed hours you wanted and you chose 35. But now you've only been given one day a week?

Ryvitas · 31/07/2023 23:17

That's right yes, for this week at least.

You've not started any training yet so there's none to pay back

Leave

HaveSomeIntrospect · 31/07/2023 23:19

Are you contracted for 35 hours?

Ryvitas · 31/07/2023 23:23

I have completed the training unfortunately..
It's just really not clear.
We don't receive a formal contract until after probation (12 weeks)
However they advertise contacted hours.

Well this is confusing me?

MercianQueen · 31/07/2023 23:26

If there's no contract until after probation, then how can they enforce the payback of onboarding? Sounds dodgy as hell to me and I'd just leave - no contract, no notice, no payback.

PurelyOrnamental · 01/08/2023 00:08

Care work I assume?
Start looking for something else, the chances of them actually claiming the training costs back from you are low.
If they try it on make sure you keep copies of your rotas and the agreement you would get 35 hours a week, they are just dodgy buggers trying it on.

Ryvitas · 01/08/2023 10:11

Thank you. I will do, it's a shame as it does seem a very nice job otherwise, but it's not fair of them to take on too many staff for the amount of work they have available and make false promises.
