Help me with my ingrown toenail I'm in agony

Due a pedicure on Wednesday and last week notice a bit of my nail on big toe hanging off so pulled it off instead of clipping/filing it and I'm in agony the last few days.

I've cut a V in the middle but it's not helping, wearing trainers to walk my dog earlier had me limping and just washed my feet in bath and it's agony to touch the side of my toe, does anyone have any fast relief? 😩

You want some cotton wool and a needle and you’re going to push the cotton wool under your nail until the ingrowing bit is lifted from the skin. Change the cotton wool daily and it’ll soon be fixed. You’ll also have near instant relief.

Something to numb it perhaps like germolene or lidocaine plus an ibuprofen or ibuprofen gel. Hope it gets better x

One of my big toes is prone to go ingrown at one side cut down the side. I sterilise scissors and tweezers. I cut down the side of the nail and use the scissors to pull ingrown bit out. Then I dunk toe in antiseptic

Soak your foot in a bowl of warm water with lots of salt, softens the skin and nail and keeps infection away. I used to get regular ingrown toe nails and it works a treat.

Go to a podiatrist as soon as you can. They will be able to fix it so quickly for you.

All the above plus put your foot in a bowl of water as hot as you can bare comfortably with a MASSIVE shake of table salt in it.

Make it really salty. A big table spoon. Stir it round and let it dissolve and then sit there with your foot in it for half an hour or so. It kills any bacteria and soothes. Do it morning and night. Let your foot air dry and then nice bit of soothing cream on it.

The cotton wool thing works too. Do that after the salt water obs :)

I get these regularly. Podiatrist says soak in salty water for five minutes for two to three times a day.

I've tried all the cut down methods and sticking cotton wool under it.

The thing that works best for me is separating the skin and the nail a different way....get a plaster....stick one end near the affected end....it needs to be with the part of the plaster that is supposed to cover a cut facing up and the rest of the plaster goes UNDER the toe, not over it...pull it quite hard til you feel the skin move away from the nail. Stick it down to the underside of the toe. Leave in place for several days.

It's the top one on this page. Good luck!

I have frequent ingrown toenails and the cotton wool tricked has worked for smaller cases, and the salt water until the nail softens and then cut away the dodgy part has worked when it's really bad.

CateringPanic · 31/07/2023 21:47

Eek ingrown toenails can be agony! When they get really bad the only thing to do is get them professionally seen to.

If you are prone to them OP I would highly recommend a procedure I had on mine several years ago where the edges of my big toenails were removed and the root killed off so it never grows back. I still have big toenails (just smaller than before) but I’ve never had an ingrown toenail since - best £500 I ever spent tbh!

DD (17 at the time) had the same. Worked for her too. 8 years on and never another ingrown nail.

Woahtherehoney · 31/07/2023 21:53

I’d 10000% recommend seeing a podiatrist and getting it looked at, especially if you get them repeatedly. Mine ended up so bad on both toes I’ve had both my big toenails removed. Ingrowing toenails are so painful.

Chuckthetowelin · 31/07/2023 21:54

Grit your teeth and lift the corner of the nail and poke some cotton wool under it to lift it, change this daily (preferably after soaking). Or you could do what I do and just dig it out. I wouldn't recommend doing that if you're diabetic though.

ExtraOnions · 31/07/2023 21:55

17 year old DD has just had hers operated on … no more Ingrowing toenails ! If you can see a Podiatrist please go

greenteaandmarshmallows · 31/07/2023 21:56

Do the salt water thing. If no relief and its getting worse see a doctor sooner than later. I left it too late and my toenails had to be removed so far down that they've never been the same sinxe

Magnesium sulphate paste is your friend. Draws out infection. Then bite on a pencil and jab those heavyweight scissors in
