With avocados, the best thing to do is to buy them about a week before you need them, keep them in the fridge until about 2 days before you need them when you take them out of the fridge and hide them underneath a bunch of ripe bananas in the fruit bowl. They then ripen up in a day or two. Obviously you had to remember to buy the bananas a week ago too, in order to give them time to ripen, so that you could use them to ripen the avocados.

You're not wrong!

Ripe and ready to eat…my arse

Careful OP - this could be misconstrued as an offer 😂

Now I know why people say they smell 'ripe' at the end of the day Wink

SuePine69 · 31/07/2023 14:37

I think what might have happened is that one retailer decided to sell at a premium fruit that hadn't been picked under-ripe. Then other retailers decided to get in on it but were dishonest. It's the same with sourdough bread.

My hope is that when we get AI robots picking fruit they can pick closer to the natural ripeness and we won't get under-ripe fruit. You can ripen them in the fruit bowl but they never develop the flavour they should have.

Childhoodnostalgia · 31/07/2023 14:38

How are supermarkets getting away charging what they do for supposed ‘perfectly ripe’. I’ve given up buying peaches, nectarines, plums and avocados we just turn into guac with pestle and mortar to soften 😄

willWillSmithsmith · 31/07/2023 14:41

I bought some recently like that. I really had a good mind to go back and ask for a refund but didn’t get round to it. It’s not the first time it’s happened either, bloody annoying!

HRTQueen · 31/07/2023 14:41

M&S veg and fruit is always way under ripe but looks nicer on the shelves

I recently bought some sweet ripe apricots. Yes they were apricots that was the only correct word in the description

mrsbyers · 31/07/2023 14:48

I buy them yellow stickered on the day they are meant to be best before then wait about another week

Wasn't sure what I would find clicking on this thread.. Relieved it was about fruit..

Ha ha! Me too!!

DarkForces · 31/07/2023 14:52

I brushed my last peaches with maple syrup and put for 30 mins in the air fryer after they were going mouldy but we're still rock hard. Made the best overnight oats ever!

Zepherine · 31/07/2023 14:53

I had some ripen at home avocados from M&S once. Like bullets until I chucked them in the bin 3 weeks later.

Catspyjamas17 · 31/07/2023 14:56

I agree. It's just an excuse to charge more anyway and just adds insult to injury when it isn't ripe. The bloody shoddy, sorry state of overpriced fruit and veg in British supermarkets anyway. They seem to be buying the shittest, cheapest, smallest possible and whacking a great big premium on it. Fruit and veg was so much better when we had actual greengrocers.

All fresh fruit and veg should be ready to eat when you get home, unless it's described as "ripen at home".

Catspyjamas17 · 31/07/2023 14:59

We used to get lovely fat lush peaches and ripe plums from the greengrocers in summer- now these never make it to British supermarkets in season- just horrible, tight, forced little fruits and you only see decent soft fruit on holiday in France, Spain or Italy.

Bluebellbike · 31/07/2023 15:02

For the last couple of weeks I have been buying a pack of 4 "ripen at home" nectarines from M & S for £1.00. After a few days they were absolutely perfect. Full of flavour, juicy and delicious.

Best not to bother with fruit.
Crisps are less disappointing.
And doughnuts.

As my friend’s son always said ‘ You know what you’re getting with a Mars bar’.

MissMogwai · 31/07/2023 19:40

Pears always do this to me. Rock hard for days then a 5 minute window of deliciousness before turning to mush. Bastards.

Also - plums.

gogomoto · 31/07/2023 19:48

The trick with avocados is to put them in a paper bag with a banana. Honestly, it works.

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 31/07/2023 22:38

Yep. They are lying bastards.

Northernlass99 · 31/07/2023 22:42

Arrrgh avocados, I have given up. Now I buy the bags of frozen ones. Just have to remember to get it out the night before. Same with the little pots of mango - they definitely mix unripe mango in with the ripe mango. Now I just get the frozen stuff.

Nat6999 · 31/07/2023 22:46

I bought a pair of so called rip avocados a fortnight ago, they are still on the kitchen window sill ripening.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/07/2023 23:47

I buy canned or frozen fruit. Saves all this nonsense.

Just get the ones that are still nice in that format. So canned peaches or pineapple. Frozen berries. Bananas are disgusting, so don't need to think about those.

For avocadoes, I've perfected this. Only from M&S and only when they're on offer. Put in a bag with a sacrificial apple - M&S sparks card freebie or windfall, don't worry about bruises, you're not going to eat it. Stock up in autumn and you're set for months, if not until next autumn. I still have one from last year in the fridge, and this year's are nearly ready on the trees.

After about a week, start checking it daily and think about how you're going to eat it. A few days later you have 2/3 days to eat it while it's ripe before it goes black. So do so and don't forget about it.

If M&S aren't doing cheap deals on avocado, do without or buy the tubs of smashed avocado.
