Hi
Just wondering to see what anyone else would do. I'm struggling to get a job where I currently live and I'm only getting short term contracts as a supply teacher no councils are employing anyone permanent. I have 4 kids 3 at High school 1 at secondary. Should I move for a full time job? If I wait till they have all finished school I'll be 53 by then!

Hi Op, I would move if it meant a positive change for your family. Probably not if it meant that the DC will be disrupted with exams / friendship groups as that could cause a lot of issues, especially depending on how far you want to move. Have a look for a job elsewhere, have an open discussion with your DC - how would they feel about a move / will you have a support network where you are going? Make sure their voices are heard and come to a decision that suits all of you. Good luck.

Hi thank you,

I'll ask what they think about moving, it is scary to think of it but in the long run would be better. Its horrible not working, can't save up or buy a property.

OP, out of curiosity, what country are you in? I ask because round where I'm from (North West, UK) high school and secondary school are the exact same thing.

Only an issue because the landscape of teacher employment abroad may be very different to the status quo here in the UK.

Another question.....how old are you NOW?

louhai77 · 31/07/2023 12:49

I'm 45 the now and we live in Scotland. The next feasible time to move would be in 7 years when my youngest finish school we're all at a transition atm in terms of what happens next could move would I lost my job after covid and been doing bits and bobs ever since!

I'm surprised you can't get a permanent job where you are - pretty much every school locally where I am are in desperate need for teachers - I'm in the SW.

louhai77 · 31/07/2023 12:58

I know everywhere else is desperate for teachers, they need people as well in scotland it's just the conditions are bad for example I was on fixed term contract until end of term, I was told I wasn't needed and let go the same.week. so.not had an income since May this has.happened to so many people but people just put up with it. Its so difficult to compare areas. The unions can't deal with the amount of referrals.
