Barbie and Ken if you poor

So, I just had 2 x generic barbies, a skipper and a Ken.
We didn't have the money for all the 'sets' to make her doctor, showjumping, lawyer or whatever, so she was just a perfect blonde. Mum and I made her clothes and it was fun.
Ken was a love rat in my house who was shagging all 3 of them.
AIBU to see that it is only about money for Mattel, not the fricking 'mission for female empowerment' Helen Mirren is bleating on about on the film, and they didn't have a clue about how lots of girls, especially in the 80s, played with her?

I had a secondhand fake Sindy’s ugly friend…with no clothes.
I bought my Dd the one she wanted that all her friends had.

I had Amanda Jane too! I was probably a bit spoiled with toys but I loved my dolls!! I had a brunette Weekend Sindy, a blonde Lovely Lively Sindy, her friend Vicky, her sister Patch, her cousin June (think I save cereal packet coupons for her!), and Sindy's boyfriend Paul. I never had a Ken 🙄

I had a few Barbies, including Malibu Barbie who came with a tan, and her sister Skipper. I also had Tressy and Mary Quant's Daisy. I had Pippa, Marie, Tammy and Britt, and I had the four Disco girls, Domino, Dee, Tia and Britt!!

I still have all of them, their clothes, shoes, wardrobe, bath, horses etc in my roofspace!

So true. Sindy for me too. I always felt Barbie had that pinched nose-job look.

In the spirit of the Three Yorkshiremen, but occasion by the OP, my family was too poor for such toys, though I would have dearly loved Barbie/Sindy/Tressie.

I made up for it buying DD shedloads of Barbies - invariably from car boot sales as in her book quantity was all.

I loved the film and am glad it's started some threads and controversy - good to see feminism being on the agenda again.

My Barbies had no interest in Ken - they went on adventures, mountain climbing (the stairs), parachuting (also the stairs), swimming across the ocean (the bath), getting attacked by giant monsters or aliens (teddy bear or the dog) and frequently getting lost in blizzards, run over by cars, failed parachutes, fires or being attacked by sharks and resulted in dramatic rescues by another Barbie or the Bionic Woman. This resulted in many casts and bandages made from toilet paper.

My dolls had to share Paul, my brother's Action Man, and his Captain Maddox!!

My mum made a lovely bed for Amanda Jane from a Matchbox car box. It had a mattress, mini blanket, a patchwork quilt and a pink pillow with lace on it.

My Sindy ran away with a fake Action Man who had no genitals.

This was the barbie I loved the most.
I had quite a few barbies, and a few Cindy's.
I much preferred my little pony though.

Never had a Barbie or Sindy, but had the cheap ones of the market.

Zero interest in Ken, wasn't even properly aware of him.

My brother's discarded Action Man however -with the Buzz cut and Eagle Eyes-made for far more lively play than Ken would have been capable of 😉

Definitely! I pestered my mum for years for a cabbage patch kid, but she could never afford one. Couldn't even afford the proper Care Bears she got her friend to make me and my sister one each. We got a second-hand Sindy house for Christmas one year and it was the best present we ever had. 😂

I did get Crystal Barbie and Ken for my First Communion though, oh and day to night Barbie for my 8th birthday.

Barbie and my mum's 60s Skipper had a pink wooden stable made by my dad to ride their Appaloosa and Lipizzaner horses (non-Mattel). Wedged on horseback, because their legs weren't articulated and they didn't have trousers.

There may have been a Ken? He was ignored.

Cost a fortune and ugly to boot.

We were very wealthy but I only had a few Barbies and they were all gifts.

We just didn't have TV so it never really occurred to me to want them . And the money was mainly spent on education/experiences anyway. Christmas wasn't some crazed frenzy of overconsumption.

i had a nice selection of dolls growing up, I started with polly pockets but barbie was my first big girl doll it came with a Pegasus horse ,
some were knock off barbies from the £1 shop, I had 1 or 2 sindy dolls,

then i moved on to myscene dolls and later on bratz dolls ,

i never had Ken, I just used my brothers action man dolls for the husband 😂
I used to dress them up , do their hair, re enact Eastenders episodes or make up dramatic plots, fun times

dolls are just really good for role play, creativity , and imagination
I remember I wanted my barbie to go swimming so I got a big plastic box and made her an out door pool in the garden , spent a lot of time on it

Am I the only poster who had Action Girl and her horse? She had black hair, blue eyes and dressed in camouflage gear! Loved her

I had a singular barbie and I ripped her head off. I was a Bratz girl (00s).
