Developmental paediatrician - what to expect?

My 3.5 year old son has an initial assessment appointment with a developmental paediatrician soon (waiting for him to be diagnosed with autism). Please can anyone with experience of this process advise me what to expect from this appointment? Is this the appointment where he will receive a formal diagnosis? Or is this just the first of many appointments leading up to a diagnosis? Thanks.

Usually part of a process, which includes questionnaires for you/school/nursery, and often input from a speech and language therapist.

My son was a year older when he was the paediatrician. But she was lovely. She got him playing with some wooden blocks, but then asked me lots of questions. But she was always keeping an eye on him, I suppose to see what he was doing and how he was processing things etc. she then showed him a book with no words, and was asking him questions about it. It's all very chilled, lots of little activities but designed to look at him in different ways. Hope that helps 😀

We had to get reports from childminder and also answer questionnaires.

She observed him play with some toys/books and tried to engage with him.

We had three appointments but one was online (Covid) - my son was very clearly autistic though - stimming, non-verbal, repetitive behaviours etc.

Paed said she was fairly sure even online but wanted to be certain hence the wait.

However my older son is also autistic so they were fairly sure from early.

Also to add she was really kind and nice and it was not a difficult appointment.
