Crazy names and pronunciations.

A trip to the park resulted in my son meeting a child named "Gallant". My son kept saying with his Manchester accent and he dad kept correcting him under his breath pronouncing it sort of like "Gerlarnt".
I have not heard anything like it. The child was a lovely boy, the dad was an ostentatious sap correcting a six year because he chose to call his child a name that will be pronounced differently according to regional accent.
Anyone else heard any silly names or pronunciations for standard names?

Was he not Geraint? A completely normal and quite common name in Wales?

If he was called Gallant, then bloody hell, what a name to live up to.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/07/2023 13:20

Geraint? It's a Welsh name.

parliamoglesga · 30/07/2023 13:21

Geraint.

im not Welsh but I’ll bet it was geraint

watersprites · 30/07/2023 13:22

Maybe it wasn't an English name, surely you've come across this phenomenon before?!

Yep that was my first thought. I've come across a LOT of unusual and weirdly wonderful names but I strongly suspect this was not one of them and it was actually a misunderstanding on your part.

No Gallant as in brave as in "Gallant knight" .
He went to great lengths to tell me about how he wanted his son to grow up to be Gallant and brave.

Fair enough but now I'm wondering how to say that in a Manchester accent so it sounds different.

I’m pretty familiar with a Manc accent and I’m not sure how this would be pronounced differently

DDs name sounds awful in a Yorkshire accent though, unfortunately that’s where we live

Sheranovermytoes · 30/07/2023 13:28

My son pronounced it with short vowels, he kept correcting him saying it was said like "Ger-larnt".
It was all a very strange 20 minutes .

Sending Gallant the best of luck for high school

I heard of toddler twins a couple of weeks ago. The little boy was called Elijah, so far so normal. His sister however was called Dehliyzya (or some other strange spelling) to rhyme with her brother.

suchafunnybear · 30/07/2023 16:21

In what accent is gallant pronounced "ger-larnt"?
I'm in southeast England and have only ever spoken it and heard it with short "a"s.

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/07/2023 16:51

I can't imagine it being pronounced that way.

TwoManyKids · 30/07/2023 16:59

I'm glad this thread hasn't descended into "DD used to go to schools a La-sha- pronounced Ladasha"

This!

In RP "gallant" still has short 'a' sounds. Can't think of anywhere it would be "ger-lant'.

I am a typical MIL and I picked a beautiful name for my newborn DGD, you know to save my DIL the trouble after all that pushing…. Anyway the ingrate decided to pick a different name altogether but in my heart my DGD will always be GinLaToniqua

Katemax82 · 13/12/2023 07:23

My daughters best friend is called Iona. Perfectly simple (eye-own-er). However another mum always called her "ill-own-er despite hearing it said correctly all the time
