To ask how you measure French liquid paracetamol for toddlers

Posting for traffic. I'm currently on holiday with my toddler. Stupidly I didn't bring calpol with me. He needs some and I've managed to get their own equivalent. However, I don't really understand the dosage and the translation. I've bought this: https://www.soin-et-nature.com/en/2890-doliprane-24-oral-suspension-100ml.html

The syringe is in KG rather than ml. So my assumption is if he weighs 16kg he can have a dosage on the syringe of 13kg (max in one go) plus another 3kg. But does anyone know. I can post a picture of the instructions if that helps. They are on the website though I believe. I would be grateful for any French speakers to help or anyone who just knows.

Buy DOLIPRANE 2.4% ORAL SUSPENSION 100ML for babies and children

Order easily in online pharmacy, drug DOLIPRANE 2.4% Oral suspension to fight against fevers and pains in children.

I think you have it right, what a weird way of doing it though, what if you don't know the weight of the child and don't have a scale handy.

Yes measure out doses adding up to 16 kg for him. From the website you linked, it gives this example:
For a child weighing 15 kg, the dose per dose is one syringe for oral administration filled up to the 10 kg graduation and one syringe for oral administration filled up to the 5 kg graduation.

I've looked at that page, part way down under the list of different preparations there is a table that says how much paracetamol is in each.
Under "p grad 1kg" it says 15 mg - so I interpret this as the syringe being marked so that the dose per kg is 15mg. That's in line with how we dose paracetamol to children in hospital (and there is further info below that confirms this interpretation).

If one syringe full is dosing for a 13kg child, you'll probably find that's an adequate dose rather than fiddling around with a little bit more. Or you could go with the 8 kg marking, twice, as it should be marked linearly.

Hope your little one feels better soon.

Yes you are correct. If you think about it - this way it's much better than the generic dosage that we give in the UK based on age.

Thank you so much. It was the example that concerned me. I was worried that a 15kg child could have 10kg dose followed by a 5kg at a later time. But I understand the two syringe instruction now. MN to the rescue again!

It's helpful to do it by weight if your child is bigger or smaller than average. I always dosed my children by weight when they were little - for example, average weight for a 3.5 yr old is around 15 kg, mine were 21kg at that age ... (now all grown up, been tall and slim since about the age of 7)

Lonecatwithkitten · 30/07/2023 06:24

Much more accurate and therefore safer to dose by weight. The French araceyamol quick use powder sachets are also good too.

Wallywobbles · 30/07/2023 06:42

If I remember correctly there are 2 colors in different doses so they have less of the stronger one when they're bigger.

It's really a great way of doing it. I can't remember a time when I didn't know what the kids way roughly. Always weighed at the doctors.

And easy to see a doctor here. Even if you are a tourist.

If they're small or vomiting the pessaries are brilliant too.

Hello, I live in France and yes, you're right. If it is the pink doliprane, then it's measured in weight.
Feel free to pm me if you need other help.
