To be mortified by this comparison

Just arrived on holiday, walked on the beach, had a swim, then popped to get fish and chips for tea. Bloke behind the counter says 'wow, I can't believe it, you are the absolute spit of my mum'. He must have been 30 and I'm 50. Is this a downward point now when you stop being like peoples friends or sisters, and instead their mum?

Yanbu, it comes as a bit of a surprise to realise you have reached that stage in life, i get it too, man in my local corner shop calls me ma'am and two girls in their 20's who regularly come into my place of work call me auntie, i know in their culture its meant as a sign of respect, and im not offended, but it dont help with the realisation that im not actually as young as i fell in my head 😂

Gloriousgardener11 · 29/07/2023 19:12

Well technically you are old enough to be his Mum !
Comes as a shock I know, wait until you’re compared to someone’s Granny

sewerrat · 29/07/2023 19:12

why mortified? good chance you are the same age as his mum. he also could look older than he is.

bibbityboppityboo · 29/07/2023 19:15

I mean, you're definitely the right age to have someone of that age as your child. It's not really a rude comparison - I read the title thinking someone had compared you to something terrible 😬

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 29/07/2023 19:15

Someone stood and offered me a priority seat on the tube last week. I'm 57. Dang that made me feel old. Took it politely as they meant well.

Weetabixwithberries · 29/07/2023 19:16

We've had a new person join our team this month and one of our younger colleagues said "omg you're older than my mum!" when new lady mentioned her age.
That was very awkward, new lady just said Oh thanks 🫣

blahblahblah1654 · 29/07/2023 19:16

It's it rude. I'm 38 and my mum is 59. I'd expect
A teenager to think I'm old enough to be their mother and my DS is only 3

blahblahblah1654 · 29/07/2023 19:16

It's not rude I mean

Hankunamatata · 29/07/2023 19:16

Well u don't know what his mum looks like

Lagershandy · 29/07/2023 19:17

A lovely young (teen) girl, gave up her seat for me on the tram last week. Christ I felt old, (well I am, but my head still thinks I'm 16!)
It doesn't seem that long ago I was the seat giver upper....

Ottercave · 29/07/2023 19:17

My DD1 will be 30 when I’m 50 so I wouldn’t see it as an insult. 🤷‍♀️

user1477391263 · 29/07/2023 19:18

I can see how you might feel put out if people in your social milieu tend to have kids in their 30s, but in some places/cultures it’s not uncommon to have kids in your early 20s. That said, I think it’s probably one of those things where it’s best not to make the comment at all (age related stuff and appearances…. Lots of room for giving offense).

xPeaceXx · 29/07/2023 19:19

That is not necessarily a remark about how old you look. Helen Hunt and Leelee Sobieski are 20 years apart but look very alike, it's like a family look.

I get more 🫥🙄 if younger people at work say things like 'oh my mum watches that too' , "my mum likes red wine too" , 'oh my mum loves those too" as it shows they see you as a mum despite your age being closer to their age than to their mother's. But in the end, I smile wryly, in about 15 minutes they will be 50 and they will understand that 50 is not 63.

LaughOutInTheGrass · 29/07/2023 19:20

Why would you be mortified? You are probably around his mums age. If he was also 50 and said it, I’d understand a bit more, but even then you could just look like a younger version of his mum.

CMOTDibbler · 29/07/2023 19:21

My ds is 17, and I do know I could easily be a granny, but in my mind I am Not That Old.

This. I’m 50. This wouldn’t bother me!

Binningtonianrose · 29/07/2023 19:24

I told some boys in my class that I was.playing for a ladies cricket team. They looked at me kindly and said 'Miss, I think you mean rounders'.

Binningtonianrose · 29/07/2023 19:27

Because I obviously look too old and female for that-

FOJN · 29/07/2023 19:30

What's wrong with being a mother of adult children or 50+?

Why do you need the man serving you fish and chips to perceive you as younger than you are?
