With this complaint to agent?

I’m not well versed in electrics so not sure what my position is.

Before I moved into my apartment it was advertised as having broadband ports, landline ports and TV ports both by the landlord/agent and in the developer’s manual.

I don’t need landline. The virgin media engineer said the broadband was fixed in the living room but I wanted my router in the bedroom. In the connections part of the room there were 2 thick cables and 2 thin cables.

He fed the broadband from the living room to my bedroom using the 2 thick cables. The 2 thin cables were left. Pictured with the blue circle.

Anyway cutting a long story short, the landlord’s contracted has tried to connect my TV to aerial today. In doing so he has used the same cable my broadband used and now I have no wifi. Aibu to complain or
is what he did logical? It’s the 2nd photo.

Of course you complain. Say that the idiot has knocked out your WiFi, tell them that you need this to work and pay your rent, and expect it to be remedied ASAP.

See I don’t know if they might say it’s the only way to get the TV ports to work? I don’t know enough about the thin cable to know what those are for!

What are the thin wires attached to?

The thick ones - are they screw ends?

londonba · 29/07/2023 14:46

The thick ones had screw ends, the virgin media engineer put them on. I think the agent’s contractor has taken the screw ends off to convert them to his makeshift TV aerial port.

I think the thin wires are landline, i think he connected them to the bronze thing in the back of 2nd photo. The other end of the cable goes to the plant room downstairs.

Can you just get an adaptor which allows you to plug in two cables into the wall plug? That's what I've always had to do for my broadband and TV, it's fairly standard. In fact Virgin Media always send the adaptor with their TV/broadband boxes.

HakunaMatiłda · 29/07/2023 15:06

So the thick wire looks to be coaxial. Virgin use that to send broadband and tv signals to your home.

I’m guessing the TV isn’t with Virgin, but is freeview/standard aerial job?

Daffidale · 29/07/2023 15:07

I’m not an electrics person but TV aerial and broadband usually use different wiring. Might be different with Virgin as it’s cable. Either way the landlords contractor shouldn’t have messed with your broadband.

that’s correct yes.

The contractor returned and reverted their changes. They said there’s no TV connection, even though the developer’s manual states there is. They’re confused and are currently sat down strangely with a cable on their head like a halo.

Broadband’s back on though!

How does it describe the TV ports in the manuals etc?

If the building is wired for virgin then it is wired for tv strictly speaking.

Fraaahnces · 30/07/2023 07:45

Contractor is now your aerial?

nevynevster · 30/07/2023 07:48

Surely you just get TV over Internet? Do you need an aerial separately?
