Banks!

I had a call from my bank asking all manner of questions, including requesting to see a copy of the deeds to my house. Which is mortgage free. I rang them back and it was a genuine call from he "know your customer" team.

Has anyone else received such a call? Is it legal? A follow up letter states it's to meet UK legal and regulatory requirements and if I don't reap I d they'll restrict access to my accounts.

Thanks

Which bank? Personal or business account?

InMySpareTime · 29/07/2023 12:35

Never give personal data to someone who calls you. Even calling them back is no guarantee unless you did it from a different phone.
If you hang up then ring the number on the back of your card often the scammers just stay on the line silent then put "your bank" on the line.
If the bank really wants to see your house deeds, you should be able to visit a branch and talk to an actual bank employee to do it.

I've had similar re the charity accounts I am the named person for. It's tedious. But not the deeds of my house! Surely they can just check the land registry?

InMySpareTime · 29/07/2023 12:38

Be very careful with mortgage free deeds, as scammers are known to intercept post and transfer ownership of properties. It mostly happens with second homes though.
I think you can call land registry and ask them to place a block on anyone trying to transfer the deeds to another name.

Leftinlimbo · 29/07/2023 12:49

Sounds like a scam. A bank wouldn't ask for house deeds as they are no longer paper based! They can check the Land Registry if they want to confirm ownership.

It the bank Santander have asked to see a copy.
And state it's because if KYC - know your customer!

Did you ring them back on a number they provided or through an official number you sourced yourself?
If the property is mortgage free there is absolutely no need for any bank to see a copy of the deeds. I can’t imagine a legitimate bank would ask this.

Anotherdayanothernamechanged · 29/07/2023 17:10

As others have said it's a scam. If the bank has no financial interest in your property they have no business seeing anything to do with it.

Pop in branch if you're worried , Santander still have a high street presence. Otherwise speak to action fraud.

Brumbies · 29/07/2023 17:39

How is it a scam when I've had a letter from Santander reminding me to send the documents within a time scale or they may restrict my account?I will be going to a branch on Monday for sure as I see no reason for them needing to see the deeds to my house - I'm in credit, don't have any debts, etc on the account

Did you use the same landline soon after they called you

Elvis1956 · 29/07/2023 17:46

Just tell them it's none of their business. They have access to your account details and that's enough. They don't need to have anything else...They just want data to sell stuff to you.

I currently have a complaint with nat west following a account review where their manager told me to apply for a particular credit card for use abroad...They declined me...but Halifax who I also bank with have me one the same day with a large credit limit!!!

Leftinlimbo · 30/07/2023 09:28

These are Santander's ID requirements

I would be opening another account asap and telling them to crack on and restrict your account.
