to think 14 is too old to be obsessed with Matilda?

Just want to say, I've never said this to her but just asking if 14 seems a bit old to be obsessed with the new Matilda movie? Was watched twice yesterday and it's already back on again this morning?

It is good and I liked it, so I'm not saying it can't be enjoyed by an older audience, but to be obsessed?

I watched Annie all the time at that age. No harm done.

namechange998 · 29/07/2023 14:04

I was obsessed with certain films at that age and watched them over and over. My 18 year old DD used to love the barbie princess films when she was little. She still watched them now when she is a bit stressed/can't switch off.

SamuelsSheep · 29/07/2023 14:08

She's now got The Greatest Showman on. I'd say this is definitely still quite young/family based but age appropriate for a younger teen, so it's not that I was just thinking it at all musical type stuff.

I'm happy for this thread though, I'm sure when Matilda goes back on later, I'll find positives in it vs being concerned about anything.

I'm 51 and obsessed with Matilda !!! The stage musical primarily but now love the movie musical !

Goldbar · 29/07/2023 14:10

Ime it's common for older children to revisit toys/films/TV shows from when they were younger as a kind of "comfort blanket", especially when they're going though a tough or uncertain period.

Gettingbysomehow · 29/07/2023 12:35

I don't think there should be an age limit for this sort of thing. How many adults including myself build dollshouses and call it an "adult collectors hobby."
It isn't it's an excuse for still playing with toys as an adult 😂

Yes absolutely agree.

midnights0 · 29/07/2023 14:16

I'm 27 and will watch musicals on repeat all the time, they're my comfort movies

Wintersgirl · 29/07/2023 14:43

I'm afraid I don't watch it, @Wintersgirl- my Christmas movie of choice is Die Hard. I'll hand myself in at the nearest police station as soon as I've had my lunch and a little nap.

Make sure you do! Joking aside Die Hard is a good film to watch at Christmas

readbooksdrinktea · 29/07/2023 14:47

I watched Dirty Dancing on loop at that age. Count your blessings it's Mathilda, I think.

CharlotteFlax · 29/07/2023 15:12

When I was 14 I watched the films Mermaids and Hairspray (John Waters original) every single day, religiously. It was a phase. (I do still love the films though!)

What would you do if we all said she was too old to be obsessed with Matilda, anyway?!

She's just a kid who loves a really good film!

GalileoHumpkins · 29/07/2023 15:42

Which films would you find more appropriate OP? Some films are just ageless if you ask me and for you to be judging your daughter like this is weird.

for 14 years you have known your girl

and yet you needed anonymous posters to tell you not to be concerned about her loving a very popular show

Who pissed on your chips? Seriously what did that reply add? Why do you need to put down anonymous posters? I'd say that was far more concerning than a poster just asking for opinions , it takes a village and all that.

Elvis1956 · 29/07/2023 17:37

School holidays, filling time and watching a film she likes. I've watched Paddington at least 10 times, love the toy story films, like the original space jan (it could be my fav film of all time). I'm male and 54 so those films all came out since I was married!

Stompythedinosaur · 29/07/2023 17:58

I'm 42 and I've just come to terms with the fact that I enjoy obsessing over random things: a certain book series, reading about bodies on Mount Everest, a period of history.

It harm's no one. We like what we like. I think it's mean spirited to be thinking there's something problematic about your dc liking a popular movie with catchy songs.

Ummm, I'm 42 and I've watched The Hunger Games movies, the Star Wars movies and several TV series on repeat.

Such a non-issue.

willWillSmithsmith · 29/07/2023 19:08

My ex used to multi rewatch films he really liked, I used to say are you watching that again and he was a grown ass man and father.

Personally, I find it mind-numbingly boring watching the same thing twice nevermind repeatedly, it doesn't make sense to me that you would want to watch something where you know exactly what is going to happen, what people are going to say etc. Maybe the OP is like me and just doesn't 'get it' so that behaviour seems off. If you have never really experienced someone except small children watching the same thing over and over it could be worrying no matter what it is they playing.

I can’t read a book more than once but I can watch films more than once. You can discover things in it you didn’t notice first time or just enjoy the feeling/comfort the film gives. Films I can watch whenever they’re shown are Steel Magnolias and Beaches. I don’t really know why but I find them both highly watchable even after multiple viewings.

MullerInk · 29/07/2023 10:55

Some people just like watching the same thing. I always had obsessions since I was a teenager and have only recently at 32 grown out of it. I can almost categorise time periods in my life by what was my obsession at the time.

Me too!

It used to be standard to watch the same films over and over - because we all watched videos/DVDs and that's what we had. I find streaming has killed it for me and with so many options I always feel the urge to watch something I haven't seen, but my DP is still perfectly happy to keep rewatching his favourites.

BabyofMine · 29/07/2023 10:43

Well you obviously don’t think it’s normal? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Stop being a dick.

annielouisa · 29/07/2023 20:23

My DS was in love with Bugsy Malone and probably almost wore out the DVD. He was beyond proud when his 11 year old DS played Bugsy in an end of term performance. DC grow and mature at different stages growing up to soon is not important let her enjoy the joy of musicals maybe introduce her to new fun ones.

Echobelly · 29/07/2023 20:24

Sounds fine to me - my 15yo is obsessed with musicals.
