To find John Lewis confusing?

I looked at this web page and thought these chairs were £189 with 20% off. So in the sale, and well over £200 originally.

Turns out there's no discount on them at all. The 20% applies only to some of the colours.

AIBU or is this confusing?

I think because it says in red that the price includes the saving on selected lines this is reasonably clear. I would translate ‘selected lines’ as applying to a particular colour/size and not all.

there is a discount, the original price would have been over 200 then they took 20% off…

cakehoover123 · 29/07/2023 02:08

@Nomorecoconutboosts but there is no discount! The chairs were not over £200 originally. That's what I thought too :)

The original price for the chair is £189.

It's only the other colours where the discount is applied, and those chairs are £151.20 (20% off £189).

AIBU to find this confusing? I thought I was buying a chair in the "natural" colour that was originally over £200 - but not so.

So you don’t want it at £189, you only want it if it was originally over £200? Either the price is right for you or you move on. It’s not hard, is it?

theGooHasGone · 29/07/2023 02:14

This is pretty common if you shop on Amazon or other retailers with different finishes/colours - there's often slightly variations in price for each.

It's pretty simple though - they're quoting you the correct price for each colour. If you want to pay it then buy it, if you don't, then don't!

Wondeyr · 29/07/2023 03:59

I agree OP, it's clever marketing, making it look as though £189 is the sale price.

Opti46 · 29/07/2023 04:50

It’s quite clear, the price you see on screen includes the discount (so people don’t have to work it out) but only selected lines are discounted.

Spottypineapple · 29/07/2023 07:57

I agree OP. In this context it's not clear that £189 is the full price for the natural chairs and they are not on sale.

But, in the price you see on screen for the natural chairs, there is no discount because they are not in the sale. There's nothing to say they're are not one of the selected lines. So I do think it's misleading.

This.

NotSorry · 29/07/2023 08:04

Sorry, I think it’s very clear. Not sure why anyone thinks it’s misleading. As a PP said Amazon routinely do this for differing colours. Maybe I’m just used to seeing it.

GoodChat · 29/07/2023 08:05

It's not misleading. If it was on sale it would display the original price and the sale price - which the other colours will have.

mynameiscalypso · 29/07/2023 08:05

It's quite clear to me - if you look at discounted items, they have the original price in black struck through and the 'on offer' price in red. You see it a lot in some of their clothing ranges like sweaty betty where a couple of patterns of leggings, for example, are discounted.

LIZS · 29/07/2023 08:10

Where is the over £200 price? You click on chosen colour and it will show the price for that one. Presumably some are discounted but not natural. Don't think it is ambiguous at all.

BigButtons · 29/07/2023 08:16

I think it is pretty clear.
years ago I was drawn into a Gap shop because it had a huge poster advertising 20%. Off EVERYTHING.

I went in and found some things I liked and found that they weren’t actually discounted. I talked to the shop manager and she said there was teeny tiny writing that mentioned selected lines.
I pointed out that the word EVERYTHING meant everything, not selected lines. That it was false advertising to draw people in.
It annoyed me so I wrote to their customer services and they gave me a hefty voucher to shut me up 😁
now THAT is misleading advertising- John Lewes is ok.

I work in retail so I am used to this where they usually keep the most popular colour full price and reduce other variants. But the sale price would always be shown in red. However what's more confusing when I looked up this product on phone is that the reduced ones are shown reduced from £189 but on my phone the natural colour are only £149 at full price! If you want to buy them @cakehoover123 use your mobile not computer!

It’s pretty clear to me. I can’t see the problem. The black and yellow chairs are reduced, the beige and avocado ones aren’t.

Its nothing to do with using your phone, the chairs have just changed price the next day. Happens all the time in jl.

BrioNotBiro · 29/07/2023 09:04

It's pretty clear in this case, but I was in JL recently and there was a big banner with a '20% off towels' promotion. When I got to the till with my selection it turns out it was only 20% offer very limited range. I did feel I was conned then.
