This question is for you! 👍🏻 My skin is not looking very good at the moment. Nothing particularly awful, just very dull and not looking good.

I usually just use face wash which does a good job but I wanted to try some serums etc too. I researched the best types to suit my skin and watched a lot of reviews and picked some and have started using them. I’m just wondering if anyone has used these types of products such as serums (or similar products) and could offer any personal advice about whether they made any difference to their skin or whether it was a bit pointless and just a bit of a fad. If anyone could offer advice or personal experience I would be extremely extremely grateful! I just don’t want to get my hopes up unnecessarily. For context, the products im using are a vitamin c serum, hyaluronic acid Niacinamide serum

Hi, you’d be best posting in Style and Beauty. They’re brilliantly knowledgeable and very helpful.

I personally would use one serum at a time for at least a month. Take a before and after photo. Decent quality vitamin c makes a difference to me

This absolutely.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring ingredient so you shouldn't have a reaction to that, but may react to another ingredient. It should be applied to damp skin, and followed immediately by moisturiser (if applied to dry skin, it will pull moisture from the skin). Glycerin is another really good hydrating option (better imo).

SPF!! SPF every single day. Prevents aging, protects skin. Have a google of the woman who used spf every day on her face and see the difference between her face and her neck!! (On that note, bring it down you neck/chest!)

Hi OP, I use and have used a ton of skincare products, trying new things brings me joy.

How old are you? If you are 30+ I would recommend signing up to Skin+Me or Dermatica and trying a product with tretinoin (a type of retinol). They may include other ingredients in your serum depending on your skin concerns such as a stronger type of niacinamide. It will brighten your skin, minimise wrinkles and improve the texture of your skin. It is also just one product that only has to be supplemented with face wash, moisturiser and sunscreen so you end up with a very simplified skin routine.

I use all of the products your are currently using and I think good quality versions make a difference. IME, cheaper versions make less of a difference.

Vit C - brightens skin and is very good as a moisturiser. I use the Sunday Riley CEO rich cream and it makes my skin look bright and feel lovely.

Niacinamide - strengthens the skin barrier and improves the appearance of pores. I use a Paula’s Choice serum and find it helps my skin to tolerate retinol/tretinoin.

Hylauronic acid - I wouldn’t bother using this as a separate serum. All decent moisturisers contain hylauronic acid these days.

I also use azelaic (sp) acid, lactic acid and double cleanse. Bar a few hyperpigmentation spots that won’t budge, all of the above has given me very good skin in the space of about 6 months.

I have assumed that you are using a sunscreen. If you use active ingredients without sunscreen you will do serious damage to your face. I recommend Ultra Violette SPF50. Korean sunscreens are also very good but can leave a white cast.

I use products from The Ordinary. They're great. You can upload a picture of your face, list you concerns and they create a skin care package for you. My skin is so much better, and their products are really affordable.

I use a normal face wash in the morning with a vitamin C serum, brightening eye cream, lightweight moisturiser and additional SPF on top. At night time I double cleanse with a face balm and the same wash from the morning, use a retinol and hyaluronic acid serum, hydrating eye cream, a nighttime thicker moisturiser and then a sleep mask moisturiser on top. I have combination skin and spent a lot of time researching which was best of each thing to use for my skin type. I use the inkey list face wash, clean it zero face balm, a simple vitamin c serum, origins and Estée Lauder eye creams, the ordinary retinol, advance night repair serum and eye cream and nuskin pillow glow mask and a Japanese brand SPF which is brilliant x
