To use ikea wardrobes in a pantry?

So we have a totally empty wall round the corner to our kitchen. We have a rubbish old sideboard there currently. I really want more of a pantry style storage space. Would an ikea wardrobe (shelves and no rail) work? Has anyone else done this?

Do you mean deep like a Pax wardrobe, or shallow like a Billy bookcase?

My only concern would be robustness. The backs are usually quite feeble. And would they withstand moisture when cleaning?

If you are running off deep units, why not just fit Ikea kitchen units?

If you are thinking of deep units...

We used stuva in the kitchen. Shelves and white baskets on rails that pulled out. Worked brilliantly.

To my mind sounds a great idea but understand others views about robustness & moisture.

Yes I think you'd be better off with Metod high cabinets www.ikea.com/gb/en/cat/metod-high-cabinets-23609/

Would Pax be a lot cheaper?

We made a big broom cupboard from a double Pax wardrobe, it was excellent. As long as well fixed to the wall and shelves not overloaded it sounds great

I would check on Ikea, the recommended weight for the shelves if tins and stuff are going on them. I wouldn't put a metre wide Pax in there but a 50cm wide one may be ok as shed less likely to sag. Shelves sold as bookshelves might be better as they are designed for more weight than wardrobes

We have 3 pax wardrobes on one wall in our kitchen diner. I think they look great and have been there for around 4 years. No issue with robustness and they hide so much stuff

NewLeafAgain · 28/07/2023 20:38

I'd make sure they are attached to the wall at multiple points and use batons instead of the wee shelf "pins" that come in it.
Ive put some up in my utility as a long term temporary solution. Nothing as heavy as tins in them but I love having all the options

Just to add, we used the same handles as on kitchen units.

Yes.

Ooh I love this idea. I've just totally remodeled my utility room in my head!

Have a look on Pinterest. Type in "IKEA wardrobes in kitchen." 👌

Why not use IKEA full height kitchen units? It would give you a heck of a lot more flexibility- you can add a huge range of drawers, doors, baskets , internal fittings. The IKEA kitchen planner online tool us really useful to give you an idea.

I have both IKEA kitchen units in the kitchen and PAX elsewhere,- I would always use the kitchen units for a pantry.
