To cut my own hair?

I am struggling to find a hair appointment which doesn’t cost the earth that is at a time I am free.

my fancy ‘choppy Bob’ has been massacred by several hair dresser locally who only want to cut it to a graduated Bob- I have really thick hair and they never layer it enough. Then they blow dry it full of product to hide the cut till I get home…

aibu to try to cut my hair (the way I want) myself?

It’s fine. I’ve been doing it for years. You need good mirrors and a willingness to not have perfect perfect hair, but it’s so much less hassle and saves £££.

I too have cut my own hair (for at least 10 years).
Definitely don't rush the job. Maybe watch a few YouTube videos before grabbing the scissors (also make sure you have a very good pair of scissors).

I followed a Brad Mondo YouTube video (it was clearly originally posted during a Covid lockdown, but it’s still got great advice in it). It turned out pretty well.

I've been doing mine for years. Make sure you have plenty of time until you get practiced, do have a really sharp pair of haircutting scissors (can buy at Boots or similar) and only use those for your hair.
If you make a mistake, don't worry because hair always grows back and you'll learn more each time you do it.
I can now layer mine, even at the back....probably not as perfect as a hairdresser would do it but good enough for no-one to realise I do it myself. Saves so much time, money and having to make an appointment every time!

I haven't had a professional cut since 2019...but I have very long, layered hair that's quite forgiving to a home butchering. If your style requires skill, I wouldn't risk it. Just have a very careful conversation with the stylist and if you find a good one, don't let them go.

Thank you for the encouragement! Well I took the plunge. It’s certainly better than the outgrown bob I had before!

It going to need some tidying up. But I don’t think it needs an emergency trip to the hair dresser!

I do go to the hairdresser but I just have a wet cut where they wash it and cut it and I leave with it wet and then style it at home. It's a lot cheaper than a cut and blow-dry and takes a fraction of the time.

DrSbaitso · 29/07/2023 11:18

Well, having urged you to be cautious, I must now say you did a great job.

I have hair that I have long, straight and all one length. My friend does it for me, it takes her literally 2 minutes and is easier and a massive money saver.

YANBU. I have the same problem. One good haircut, then never reproduced (I have slightly curly hair, so they straighten/blow it to within an inch of its life when they realise I asked for chin-length and choppy, and it's bounced up an inch further than they thought - EVEN THOUGH I TOLD THEM THAT WOULD HAPPEN).

I'm as happy, if not happier with my home cuts as with the hairdresser (I use a 'lot of little bunches so it's all the same-ish length then thin it a bit/cut off anything sticking out' method)

I cut mine myself, inbetween very infrequent "proper" hair cuts, maybe twice a year.

My hair is cropped, and has a natural wave. So once it gets a bit longer, it fans out around my ears and just looks silly. So I just give it a bit of a cut-back around the ears and towards the back of my neck, and it's good for another 6-8 weeks.

My DH cuts mine for me with his electric shears and then kind of snips bits at it with decent hairdressing scissors to straighten it up more. I love it just a blunt shaggy bob. This is 3rd day hair and no dry shampoo in-between and I've had it ties back in a little bun but I think it's lovely.
