do you leave your dogs tied up outside shops?

I have just come out of our local tescos, however I didn't make it through the door, because two enormous dogs which had been left tied up outside came snarling towards my dog. In fact, they could almost get right in through the shop door.

The owner then came out of the shop, shouted at the dogs, hit them around the head a couple of times, then went back into the shop to continue his shopping while the dogs sat snarling at us.

So I had to go out through the side door as there was no way I could have got past them without my own dog being attacked by them.

Now I am a dog lover. But ibu to think that people shouldn't leave such obviously agressive dogs tied up outside a shop where they obviously have no control over them?

The owner is at fault here, the fact that the dogs are tethered as well will make them more aggressive as they know they cannot flee.

nailpolish · 26/02/2008 16:32

god that is awful

no wonder they are aggressive, getting beaten like that by their owner

Threadworm · 26/02/2008 16:32

That's bad. I don't leave mine tethered outside a shop because I don't feel one hundred percent sure that he wouldn't nip someone if they tried to stroke him.

Certainly not right for those two to be left like that.

RedJools · 26/02/2008 16:34

I'd never leave mine tied up outside a shop- someone would steal them! (well, maybe I'm biased, but they are pretty!) they are also noisy, and my toes would be curling all the way round the shop, listening to the buggers!

Ellbell · 26/02/2008 16:34

No wannaBe, yanbu. I do occasionally leave my dog tied up outside shops, but only if I am just popping in to pick up a pint of milk or something (and will therefore only be 5 mins). I would never leave her there while I tried to do my weekly shop, and I prefer it if it's the kind of (small, local) shop where I can keep an eye on her while I'm inside. I also try not to tie her right by the door, so that people going in or coming out don't have to go right past her if they don't want to. She is 14 and quiet as a lamb, but I know that some people are scared of dogs and I wouldn't want them to be put off going into the shop by her presence. That sounds like a horrible experience. I hope you and your dog are OK.

wannaBe · 26/02/2008 16:35

thought that too np.

One of the shop assistants let me out the side door and they were having a conversation about whether those dogs should be left tied up so close to the shop. There is a vets two doors down so is inevitable that other dogs might have come past with owners and been attacked.

And it wasn't just growling but full-throated snarling and lunging at us.

Wannabe... did you take your dog into the shop? I didn't think they allowed dogs in apart from guide dogs?

The owner of the other dog is at fault, I hate violence towards animals. He has probably made his dogs like that by being so horrible to them.

When I had a dog I would tie him up outside the paper-shop every morning but he was a very placid collie/corgi cross.

flowerybeanbag · 26/02/2008 16:37

I wouldn't because I'd be worried he'd be dog-napped because he's very desirable and pretty (see profile ).

And YANBU, sounds like a nightmare dog-owner generally really

wannaBe · 26/02/2008 16:39

he is a guide dog beaniesteve.

So didn't anyone from the store say or do anything?

Rather than just leave by the side door, I would have asked customer services to tannoy the owner and remove them, if they really were blocking the way (but then I'm a natural whistle blower).

And no, I don't leave my girls outside shops, but only because either someone will steal them, or kids will come and feed them unsuitable rubbish (2 gorgeous cavalier spaniels, loved by everyone, dh tells me they are babe-magnets).

wannaBe · 26/02/2008 16:41

cm comeone from the shop came over to see if I was alright and to show me the way to the side exit (it's not an exit used by customers). I don't know if they were planning to say anything to the owner, he was queuing at the time so quite possibly.

I leave my dog outside the school, nusery but don't take him if I have to go to the shops as my local sho is a tesco extra!

When I leave him I always put him out of the way, he is very friendly and will jump up at people which I understand will annoy some

beaniesteve · 26/02/2008 16:42

Ah - Wannabie - didn't realise

I'm amazed at how many people leave their dogs tied up outside our huge Tesco Extra, with a thousand shoppers and great convoys of rattling trolleys.

pedilia · 26/02/2008 17:30

patrickm-that is what I mean, loads of people do it here and half the dogs look terrified. I would be to worried about someone taking him!Having said that my cat followed me there a few weeks ago and sat outside while I picked up some bits!

2shoes · 26/02/2008 17:31

yanbu
when ds was little he used to get really upset at the dogs "left on their own"

Rachmumoftwo · 26/02/2008 22:35

I leave mine outside the local shop when I am just popping in. I put her away from the doors and the local hoodies watch her for me. She's a white Shepherd, very gentle, but I've told them she's half wolf, so they won't steal her, just admire her from afar.

twinsetandpearls · 26/02/2008 22:42

I don't leave mine as I would worry about someone taking him he is gorgues as picture on profile proves and he would go with anyone why waved anyting remotely tasty in his direction. I don't think he would bark at anyone or scare them but I would not want to take the chance. I did this once when I was in the village with my dog and saw a kid that I teach who came over to stroke my dog. I wanted to go into the butchers so tied him up put asked the child ( age 13) to watch my dog. I could see them at all times.

Cute dog flowerybeanbag

Y A N B U - that dog owner was an idiot

i used to leave my dog tied up outside shops but i don't now as i realised that she really doesn't like it.

brimfull · 26/02/2008 23:02

My dog is too much of a woos to cope with me being out of her sight in the shop...she'd strangle herself trying to get to me.

Spidermama · 26/02/2008 23:03

People who think it's acceptable to hit dogs should have the dogs taken away.

overthehill · 26/02/2008 23:09

I'm sorry to say that I'm one of the culprits, and he also gets left outside the swimming pool, library, post office etc. This is because I don't always have time to separate out all my jobs and need to combine going into town to do some errands & walking the dog. That's obviously not ideal, but I feel that being tied up outside shops is better for him than no walk at all.

One of the worst times with our previous dog was when I tied up outside one shop & left him there while I went to some others, only to realise when I'd nearly arrived home that I was missing someone, so I had to walk all the way back into town to collect him!

Having said that, I do hope no-one knows who I am & will report me to the RSPCA...we love him dearly and do look after him really!
