When will the naps end???!

Zouzee · 25/07/2023 17:21

Please help!

DD aged soon to be 4 still takes a midday or if kept awake mid-afternoon nap! My DS aged 2 can stay up longer, DD will literally fall asleep anywhere no matter how loud or bright her surroundings are. A very heavy sleeper, too big to carry or be in a pushchair who will just sleep mid eating ice cream or even if your doing everything to keep her awake.

I thought we would be over the whole having to make time for a nap during days out. Luckily she Sept born so has a whole year to wean of naps but I have no idea how to go about it.

Currently goes to nusery, doesn’t nap there a other children her age don’t but will as soon as we’re home. It’s like she thrives on 1hr naps.

Any suggestions? When will this end??
AIBU at letting this concern me?

My DD stopped at 4 years 3 months!

I used to feel so lucky when she was younger but now it’s just too much.

I hope mine is done with the naps by 4.3yrs!

What time is bedtime?

Whyohwhyohwhy123 · 25/07/2023 17:29

I think they stop when they’re ready. There’s not much you can do if they’ll fall asleep anywhere. I’ve got one who’ll fall asleep sat at the table.
id just put her in the pushchair, my six year old can still fit in the pushchair

Trust me I have done everything to keep her awake but I just cannot.

Any advice would be welcome!

Mine stopped just before aged 4, personally I'd let it happen as long as it's needed unless it's affecting night sleep?

Mine would do 2 hours from 12-2 even at nursery where his friends were running about then it started being every other day, then it slowly just pottered off. He's now 4 and 1 month and still had one catch up nap on Saturday this week.

Especially if in full time childcare I think it can be really full on and tiring so days off they sometimes just need to catch up

What time is bedtime?

Bedtime is 8pm.

Sleeps in separate room, will wake up at 6am and come to my bed till 7am.

Make bed time 5pm for a while.
that's what we did.

HAF1119 · 25/07/2023 17:34

Oh and there really isn't a 'one size fits all' to children. Those with children who happen to all stop at age 2 sometimes think there is, but if you have one who gets a lot of stimulation and gets tired and needs it, they will fall asleep no matter what! Because their brains need the rest to recoup.

There are some really interesting articles online on the topic it's not remotely harmful or worrying to have a child napping at an older age than their peers!

WhatNoRaisins · 25/07/2023 17:35

Could they be anaemic or something. It might be worth speaking to a GP to see if anything can be ruled out.

LapinR0se · 25/07/2023 17:36

She is having 10 hours of sleep at night and that is why she’s napping in the day.
You need to start either really forcibly keeping her awake and doing a 6.30pm bedtime or start waking her after 20 mins nap and doing a 7pm bedtime for a week then dropping the nap all together.

She isn't getting enough sleep at night if she is doing 8pm-6am.

put her to bed at 5.30pm

WeightoftheWorld · 25/07/2023 17:38

We kind of pushed my daughter out of her naps when she was about 3.5 after we had DC2. It would affect her bedtime if she had more than about 30 minutes tops, so we'd have to wake her and she would have huge tantrums for ages after being woken (can't really blame her for that hah). With a new baby too it was just too much hassle, she didn't nap if out so we just made sure we were out at her nap time every day for a week or so and she basically just forgot about it. At 5 she does still occasionally have a little power nap in the car though if she's really tired but it doesn't affect her bedtime or night sleep as long as it's not longer than half an hour.

To reassure you though, I know a few kids who turned 4 last autumn and are about to go to school who still nap most days.

gilfon · 25/07/2023 17:38

DD only stopped her naps when she started school at 4y3m. I think she would have continued if she hadn't been at school. She continued to nap on nursery days even when other dc didn't.

I think it's healthier to nap if the dc need it. In Scandinavian countries they continue to nap at school until much older. Many preschoolers are exhausted by the afternoon and really need to nap but just don't have the opportunity (nowhere to sit down and parents have stopped using a buggy when out and about).

HowDoYouMakeAHormone · 25/07/2023 17:39

OP - will the naps stop soon?!

OP - I hope they stop soon though

Genuinely not sure why that would be better than just letting them have a nap?

RandomMess · 25/07/2023 17:41

I would check for sleep Apnea.

My mega sleeper in reception was asleep by 6.14 latest and has to be woken at 7.30am. She just needed her sleep. Very tall for her age tbh also needed feeding or got hangry.

What?! A whole early evening to yourself? BLISS!

I loved it when my lot got to the age of stopping naps and needing an extra early night.

😁😁

The OP has literally come here to ask how to stop the naps. The naps are inconvenient to her. So your comment is entirely irrelevant.

McaRoonie · 25/07/2023 17:52

I would second the earlier to bed (if the naps are inconvenient to you).
You will have to try hard though if they won’t sleep earlier than 8. Keep her awake during the day for at least 3 days in a row- try not to do car journeys and maybe just have low level activity for those days- then start pushing bedtime to 7 or even try 6.30.
I had a sleeper and had to try hard to get them out of naps!

TheChosenTwo · 25/07/2023 17:54

My ds had a 3 hour nap until he was 3.5! Slept well at night too, 7-7, just loved sleep.
Of course I loved the time during the day, if we were out doing things he’d not have it obviously but would nod off on the drive home or crash as soon as we got in but if we were home he’d just tell me it was nap time at 10:30 and that was that!
I remember he just snapped out of it too of his own accord.
