£975 for carpeting one room

I went into a family run carpet shop today to ask for a quote. It's just the one room, an averagely sized living room in a flat. Nothing grand

The size of the room is 15ft x 11ft

For carpet, underlay and fitting they want £975

I didn't even choose any particular carpet, he simply translated the measurements into square foot and said that's how much it'll be.

AIBU to think that's ridiculous?

I think it's ridiculous he'd give a quote without asking how much per metre you're looking to pay and go through showing samples of your options based on that price point.

Fallenangelofthenorth · 26/07/2023 19:31

I always get my carpets from a local place that does room size remnants. I always get wool, and either reuse my underlay or get a mid price one, and from memory it's always been under 500 per room - all similar sized rooms - maybe 12 x 16 feet? Admittedly, not bought one for about 3 years now, but these carpets are all thick wool mix. Do you have anywhere like that near you?

I wouldn't want to pay 900 quid for polypropylene as in my experience it just doesn't wear well at all. Did they say what the carpet was made of?

Use someone who doesn’t have a show room.

Carpet this month including fitting, gripper and underlay for a room approx 5Mx 3M £475. Cormar and I think it has a 15 year guarantee (it’s not wool). The shops change the names of the carpet to make it hard to compare. I ended up doing the whole house. We got a 7k quote at tapi but used a man with a van for approx half that. Carpet is the same density etc as the retail shops.

I got a 29x12ft room carpeted last week including underlay for £1200 OP. That included extra carpet for a strange shaped alcove we have and fitting which was about £160.

We bought our own gripper (about £7 a pack from B&Q) and they charged an additional £1 a stick to fit it.

That was from Carpetright.

My DS just had 2 large bedrooms, a landing and down the stairs carpeted with underlay, door bars and full fitting. They did a very good job and he also got 2 large rugs bound around the edges in left over carpet and it cost £975. The fitting was charged separately at £175 for all rooms. I thought that was expensive but he chose carpet at £22 per square metre. It's his first house and I thought he might go for something cheaper to start him off. That is astronomical OP. £175 for fitting one room is ridiculous.

SushiSuave · 26/07/2023 20:45

I think that's very expensive. We've just had our average sized living room, stairs, landing and 2 double bedrooms carpeted as well as a small hallway and single bedroom fitted with laminate flooring and for everything including fitting we spent £1300. I'd get another quote if I were you.

greenteaandmarshmallows · 26/07/2023 20:46

They probably only use nice carpet

NJMAd · 26/07/2023 20:51

Totally depends on the price of the carpet.

We just re carpeted 6 rooms, 2 hallways and 2 sets of stairs.

Carpet we chose wasn't a premium one but wasn't cheap (I wanted bleach-able and 10 year guarantee)

We were £5500 and that was with money knocked off because we've used the guy before and got the same colour throughout.

That's a pretty horrifying price. Just a thought - why not get the floorboards polished and put a beautiful rug down instead? If your floorboards are in ok condition it would be cheaper. Or go for laminate, again with a nice rug. Fitted carpet starts looking tired after a couple of years, especially in a room that gets a lot of use, but hard flooring lasts for decades.

Get flooring instead, much nicer

GrouchyKiwi · 26/07/2023 21:19

We had a flight of stairs done for £435. They were tricky because the stairs were open so each one had to be wrapped. It took them twice as long as normal. So £975 for a presumably rectangular room seems a little pricey.

The Carpet Right website has a calculator. Will give you an idea of other carpets.

Please do not use Carpetshite!!! I did once, never again. I've always bought carpets from independents but I don't know what got into me on that occasion. A neighbour fitted it and he even told me it was shite when he was putting it on!

I hated it from the start. It looked terrible and wore so badly. Was never as glad to see anything go out of my house as I was that carpet!! It wasn't particularly cheap either.

I would never put a new carpet on an old underlay. IME the quality of the underlay is just as important as the quality of the carpet. Current carpet must be down upwards of 10 years, and has even survived an incontinent elderly cat. You can still feel the spring of the underlay when you walk on it.

That does sound like an extortionate price. Shop around.

We put a laminate floor in a couple of rooms, and it had a 15 year guarantee. Admittedly it's down longer than that now, but it's horrible, and I hate it. Want porcelain in all of downstairs (except the living room, where I prefer carpet) just waiting to win the lottery for the litany of home improvements I want to do!!

We paid £1000 for our living room carpet + fitting + underlay in our 22ftx11ft living room, 4 years ago.

Last year we needed 4 big rooms carpeting, so went back to the same shop and they quoted me £18 per square m for what we wanted + fitting + underlay.
I came home and Googled the code for the carpet and was able to buy it direct from the manufacturer for £6 per m.
So I did that and then found an independent carpet fitter via our local Facebook page. It saved us £thousands.
