For not wanting to share prime membership with family in law?

bexboz · 24/07/2023 21:18

I use Amazon to buy things like lube, pregnancy tests (when we were TTC) and books on mental health etc so it just feels way too personal to share my password with them so MIL, FIL, SIL etc would be able to see everything. They have asked to use it and then let us use their Disney+, Netflix etc but I lied and said no thanks we got rid of our prime membership. My husband isn't that fussed but isn't very good at remembering not to say things like "oh yeah we watched it on prime". Not a big deal family drama or anything, just makes me feel super awkward. AIBU?

Why don’t they just loosen the purse strings a bit, and fork out for it themselves?

At the risk of sounding like Diamond Jim Brady, how much is a streaming service really going to set them back…..? Confused

catscalledbeanz · 24/07/2023 21:37

I won't share my prime for the same reasons. My buying habits are private. I'll happily share my Disney and Netflix, my now tv is open to all my family. Not my prime. I am not comfortable with my mum seeing my drunk purchases, judging my reading choices, or seeing the obscene amount I spend on frivolity.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 24/07/2023 21:40

I'll buy things for family if they send me the money and links to what they want but no way would i share my password with them. Its different to streaming services as has card details stored for payments etc

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/07/2023 21:41

Better would be to each pay for one or other of Netflix and Disney+, and leave Prime out of it, if they want to share.

Prime is different as it’s also for shopping as you say - and then what? They order everything to your house and come and get it when they fancy? As well as the privacy as to what you’re buying aspect.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/07/2023 21:42

Forget that about coming to yours, I hadn’t thought about the fact you can get deliveries to anywhere!

I still wouldn’t share it though

ALittleBitAhAh · 24/07/2023 21:44

YANBU. I'm on my husband's Prime but have my own login so he can't see what I buy and vice versa if that's a way around it? Although IMO they should just get their own account!

Thelnebriati · 24/07/2023 21:46

YANBU and after you've said 'no' once, they shouldn't ask again.

I’d go with this angle.

I don’t even share my Prime membership with DH (incase he sees a gift before I give it to him, or he sees how much I spend on unnecessary crap)

No chance would I be sharing something that had my card information and data like Prime does.

Is it to watch tv on Amazon? If they download the Amazon prime tv app then that’s is separate from your Amazon purchase history I am sure

My sister can watch my Amazon tv but can’t order anything or see my orders. She just has the tv app that she uses to access shows. Unless she can and we have never known how to

44PumpLane · 24/07/2023 22:03

As womencanlift mentioned, just log them in to Amazon prime tv and don't tell them your password and they can set up their own profile within that and won't have access to any of your purchase history.

Or, if they have their own Amazon account, link their account to your Amazon family account and they get your prime benefits, prime tv but have no access to your actual Amazon account or passwords, you're just saying that User 1234 and User 5678 are part of the same family unit, so if User 1234 is paying for prime then their spouse/kids/(or someone else who is meant to live at the same address) doesn't also have to pay for prime but is able to use their own account to buy Amazon stuff.

They can order it to their own house through someone else's prime. My daughter is on my Amazon Prime and she uses her own card and orders to her own address.

You're allowed two separate log-ins on Prime; I used to let my mum have my spare one. When DH wanted to use it, they made us wait six months before he could be added after removing her, not sure if it's still their policy.

HappiestSleeping · 24/07/2023 22:18

The video streaming services are clamping down on password sharing. Netflix have been in the news for this, so you could always use it as an excuse if you wanted? You don't really need an excuse though.

RamblingFar · 24/07/2023 22:27

You can share it without them seeing your details though. You can add another member of your Amazon household and still have separate accounts.

This. I have my mum as 2nd log in. We can't see each other's purchases but I do get reminders that she has set up on her Echo and delivery reminders. She doesn't get mine as they are turned off, but she gets something about my shopping list.

Also, she cannot use Prime music if I'm using it. But that's the only restriction I think.

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 24/07/2023 22:35

I have family credit card details and delivery addresses saved. They send me a link to what they want and it’s a moments ‘work’ to organise.

Rewis · 24/07/2023 22:38

Do they want to use it to watch stuff? I've just added prime video to my parents TV and they watch it. Haven't shared the password.

AuditAngel · 24/07/2023 22:42

I am a second log in to DH’s account, but years ago we also linked my sister’s account. We have benefitted by getting free months added when she has complained. It was allowed when we did it, but now we can’t add DS (who lives at home) . He just orders on my log in using his card to pay

Yes, you can do this without sharing password. They would only get to watch Prime on TV not see your purchase history or be able to purchase stuff with free delivery. My son just sends DH a link if he wants something and it's delivered here as there would be nobody at DS house to receive it as he is at work all day whereas I am at home and DH WFH too. I just text him when it arrives.
