Does anyone live in Burmondsey? In London

We have just viewed a property that we like in Burmondsey. But just wanted to get an idea of what the area is like and how safe it is to walk around in the evening (say if I was walking home from the station or something). It’s less than a 5 minute walk. There is a shop about 8 seconds from the front door, and I don’t go out at night often, but just want to know what the area is like?

the part we looked at looks pretty and modern

can anyone share any experiences?

we live about 45 minutes away currently and really like our area but we need somewhere bigger and fell in love with the place we saw

Bermondsey?!

It’s a pretty big area - basically anything east of the Shard all the way to Surrey Quays. If you can share a postcode we can probably advise better. But it’s all pretty tame these days.

All parts of London have good and not so good bits. 5 mins walk from Bermondsey or South Bermondsey? Largely depends on how busy it is for how safe it is. S Bermondsey very safe if Millwall are at home as it's very heavily policed. Less safe when it's not a match day as it's a bit desolate. Bermondsey is very trendy - doesn't necessarily make it safe though.

Transport links make both ends amazing locations though.

Hufflepods · 24/07/2023 11:53

Where do you currently live? Moving to Bermondsey for more space from 45 minutes away seems like an odd move to me really.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/07/2023 12:22

Exactly that. Bermonsey is pretty central. And 45 mins away on foot or by public transport? 45 mins by train would be out of London.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/07/2023 12:23

Gah! Bermondsey.

Moroccanqueen · 24/07/2023 12:29

45 mins driving - it’s about 50 mins by train as it’s two trains but that includes the walk to and from stations so door to door. Reason we’re looking at the area is it’s closer to work.

it’s close to Burmondsey station so around se16 if that helps? Thanks everyone for all the replies

Train or tube station?

If it's SE16 then that is more Rotherhithe TBH.

Moroccanqueen · 24/07/2023 12:37

Tube - sorry not very good at this 🤣

It's Bermondsey not Burmondsey.

Op which postcode? As already stated it's a large area.

TakenRoot · 24/07/2023 12:52

It will be fine.

London is full of ordinary people going about their ordinary business at all times of day and night.

There are micro areas: is it in the middle of a high density estate?

It sounds ideally places for the tube.

Caveat on the below is that I don't know much about anything to the east or due south of Bermondsey tube station, but I lived on the SE1/SE16 border for 2 years then have been further west in SE1 for 18 months, and still spend a lot of time out in that direction.

I absolutely love the area. I do/did walk on my own a lot at night from Bermondsey/London Bridge/Borough and have very rarely had any incidents - definitely less than I have felt in other parts of London (I've lived all over SE and E postcodes).

Lots of the roads are busy with traffic and/or pedestrians through the evening and night too, so I rarely felt like I was on my own if something were to happen.

Loads of lovely pubs and restaurants. You've got the big supermarkets on Old Kent Road and loads of all night shops. Not many big parks, but lots of smaller green spaces like Bermondsey Spa gardens.

As I say, my centre of gravity is a bit to the west of yours, but happy to help with any other questions that I can!

I've lived there for 3 years and really liked the area (close to restaurants, breweries and the river). I lived near the station and had no issue walking home late at nights (ex-council building 2 min from the station). But there are some pretty shitty streets in Bermondsey too, there are obvious drug dealers hanging around the station, and other antisocial behaviours in the neighborhood.
I personally wouldn't buy there now that I have kids, but then I probably wouldn't buy in most of central London so it's just a matter of personal preference.

No offence but it's clear from your posts that you don't know much about central London. You really to do some more research about the street you are looking to buy in and the surrounding area. Go there as many times as you can, at different times of the day and night, go talk to neighbours, join local Facebook groups...

APurpleSquirrel · 24/07/2023 13:38

My DB lives in Rotherhithe SE16 - we visit several times a year & stay locally. As someone who lives in the SW, Rotherhithe feels safe & we often do the short walk from my DB house to our hotel at night & not had any issues.
Stave Hill park is lovely, great transport connections including the ferry from the Doubletree Hotel across to Canary Wharf.
When we've been out & about it seems quite busy & well lit.

TakenRoot · 24/07/2023 14:05

Is it a council house / HA swap?

IsadoraQuagmire · 24/07/2023 14:22

OP there's a great website called Crystal Roof, where you can put in a road name (it just covers London area at the moment, though they're supposed to be expanding it to cover more of the country) and it shows all sorts of useful info, transport, amenities, pollution levels, transport, demographics, wealth levels, crime levels etc
It might be useful to you, it can put you straight off an area that looks good on Rightmove! Or can reassure you, of course.

Needmorelego · 24/07/2023 14:26

It’s not very exciting. Lots of housing - unbelievable amount of flats being built.
Old Kent Road is full of traffic. Do you need schools? Some primary schools are closing due to lack of pupils.
